Sectionals Finalist Madi West Commits to Nevada for 2023

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Set to join the Wolfpack this fall, Madi West of Sebastopol, California has announced her 2023 commitment to the University of Nevada. West is currently finishing her senior year at West County High School.

Earlier this month, West competed at the Sectionals meet held in Novato, qualifying for finals in both breaststroke events. Her top finish came in the 200 where she took 8th, touching in 2:22.89. She also added a ninth-place finish in the 100 breast in 1:05.92.

Her lifetime bests in both of those events come from back in December at Winter Juniors-West. In the 100, she dipped under 1:05 for the first time in her career, touching in 1:04.68. In the 200 she was under 2:21 for just the second time in her life as she stopped the clock at 2:19.10.

Top SCY Times

  • 100 breast – 1:04.68
  • 200 breast – 2:19.10
  • 200 IM – 2:11.49

When West arrives on campus, she’ll already hold lifetime bests that would have scored at the 2023 Mountain West Championships. Her best time in the 200 breast would have been good enough to earn an appearance in the B-final of the event, while she would have missed the C-final of the 100 breast by mere tenths of a second.

West will help to restock the Wolfpack’s breaststroke group that’s set to graduate two of it’s three scoring members from the conference meet. Nicolette Jasko and Wiktoria Samula, both of whom rank among the top-10 all-time for the school in the breaststroke events, are currently listed as seniors on the roster. The only returning scorer will be sophomore Anslee Dickerson, who was a C-finalist in the 100 breast and B-finalist in the 200.

The Nevada program has had recent success in the breaststroke and IM events. At the 2021 Mountain West Championships, the team came away with golds in both IM’s as well as the 200 breast. That same year the Wolfpack had Donna DePolo qualify for Olympic Trials in the 200 breast.

Nevada had one NCAA Championships qualifier this season, with senior Benedict Nagy earning a spot in the 400 IM after winning her third straight Mountain West title in the event.
