Seliskar Splits 1:32.3 as Cal Downs Pac-12 Meet Record in 800 FR Relay

2017 MEN’S PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Cal Bears kept the ball rolling with their 2nd Championship Record in as many events at the 2017 Men’s Pac-12 Championships in Federal Way, Washington. Shortly after taking down the Pac-12 Conference Record and Championships Record in the 200 medley relay, the Bears returned to take down the Championship Record mark in the 800 free relay.

Splits Comparison:

Team 1st 200 Split 2nd 200 Split 3rd 200 Split 4th 200 Split Final Time
Cal 2017 Long Gutierrez– 1:33.44 Andrew Seliskar– 1:32.35 Michael Jensen– 1:33.38 Ryan Murphy– 1:32.90 6:12.07
USC 2014 Dylan Carter– 1:33.61 Dimitri Colupaev-1:34.16 Reed Malone- 1:32.85 Cristian Quintero- 1:31.92 6:12.54

Sophomore All-American Andrew Seliskar was instrumental to the win, as he tore through the water in 1:32.35 split on the 2nd leg to pull ahead of the USC Trojans, who took the early lead thanks to Dylan Carter‘s speedy 1:32.15 leadoff split. Senior Ryan Murphy was also sub-1:33, bringing the Bears home in 1:32.90 as they took down USC’s former Championship Record of 6:12.54 from the 2014 Pac-12 meet.

Fast no doubt – but probably no better than top 5 at NCAAs for the 800 free. Texas & NC State are clearly the two to watch in this event (with Texas the favorite). Cal is in there with UF, Louisville and IU for 3 through 6.

I’m wondering if they use Murphy on this relay at NCAAs. That could make a big difference.

If Murphy swims this at NCAAs there’s no way NC State beats Cal, and maybe not even if he sits it out. Obviously their chances are better if Held swims it, but I doubt he will. No one touching Texas here, tho.

I know a lot of the State fans on here are obnoxious – but objectively they look faster than Cal and everyone not Texas in this relay.

For one thing Murphy swam this last night didn’t he? Also why would Murphy swim this at NCAAs (along with every other relay), but Held (a freestyler who swam on this relay last year at NCAAs) not swim? State went a 6:09.8 at ACCs the other day (with Held and his beard swimming btw). Murphy split slower than all 3 of State’s non lead-off legs. So yeah – there’s no way State could beat Cal at NCAAs…. (even though they did it last year)

I guess I overstated it – of course State *could* beat them – but I suspet Cal has a lot more time to drop than NCS. We’ll have a better idea after the rest of this meet. Neither Murphy or Held is swimming 5 relays, and I think Cal gives up more by leaving Murphy off the 800, compared to the 200. I would guess it’s the reverse for NCS – they have a better 4th option on the 800, than on the spring relays or either of the medleys. But of course State left him off the 400 MR at ACCs….

Very good 1.32.16 lead-off leg by freshman Cameron Craig too.
He was one of the revelations of last junior pan pacs and he confirms his talent now at ASU with Mr Bowman.

I was about to say the math doesn’t make any sense

1:32.15 is actually Dylan Carter’s split from tonight, not 2014. He swam a 1:33.61 to lead off the old record. (I only know because I just had to check to see if he really had gone the exact same time lol)
