On the last night of the Mel Zajac Jr. International both Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson and Yuri Kisil, who will both be representing Canada at the Olympics this summer, took home a win.
Seltenreich-Hodgson won the 100m freestyle in a swift 56.83 to take down 800m freestyle winner Mary-Sophie Harvey. Harvey threw down a 57.34 in order to touch ahead of rising Canadian breaststroke star Kelsey Wog.
Yuri Kisil, who trains at the Vancouver High Performance Centre with Seltenreich-Hodgson, won the men’s 100m freestyle in a time of 50.16. Kisil will be representing Canada this summer in both the 50 and 100m freestyles, and is a staple on the men’s relays. Kisil took down Carson Olafson who was a 51.39 and Stefan Milosevic who was a 52.20.
Ashley McGregor managed to take down several of her Canadian breaststroke rivals en route to a win in the 50. With a 32.44 at the touch she was just able to hold off Kierra Smith who touched one one-hundredth behind her in 32.45.
Keaton Blovad’s performance in the women’s 100m backstroke was just as impressive, continuing a theme of rising backstroke talent in the great white north. Blovad swam a 1:01.94 in order to claim the race marking a solid improvement.
Olympic medallist and 2016 Canadian Olympian Richard Weinberger, who is more known for his open water swimming, won the men’s 1500m freestyle final in 15:39.73.
