Serbian National Water Polo Player Nikola Radjen Tests Positive For Cocaine

Sebian National water polo player Nikola Radjen has tested positive for cocaine use, which he confirmed on his personal Twitter account on Friday.

The 30-year old is a star in the sport (supported by his 30,000 followers on Twitter) who spent last season playing for the club Olympiacos in Greece. He has been a member of both the 2008 and 2012 Serbian Olympic Teams that won bronze; the 2009 and 2011 World Championship teams that won gold and silver respectively; and has been a member of 5 FINA World League championship squads as well.

While Radjen says that he won’t have any comment until the “completion of the process,” he confirms that FINA has sent preliminary results of his doping test to his home federation.

Local media has speculated that under newly-adopted FINA and WADA rules, Radjen could face a suspension of up to four years, which would likely end his career.

Losing one of their premier two meter defenders will be a blow to the Serbians who are trying to rebound from a 7th-place performance in Barcelona at the 2013 World Aquatics Championships.

At 6’5″ and 103kg (220 pounds), Radjen was the biggest player on the 2014 European Championships squad for the vaunted Serbians.

He did NOT confirmed to be charged with cocain use, just that FINA had informed the Serbian federation of anti-doping violation charges, and Radjen this season plays and still plays for Olympiacos.
