Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Greg Winslow Brought Forward in October 2012; No Charges Filed Yet

Jerry Cobb of the Maricopa County Attorney’s office tells us today that the sexual abuse  allegations against Greg Winslow by his former Sun Devil Aquatics and University of Utah swimmer remain under review and no charges have been filed against Winslow at this time.

While not certain whether charges will be brought against Winslow, the University of Utah Athletic Director, Chris Hill, issued a statement last week stating that the school will not renew Greg Winslow’s contract in June. Winslow, however, remains on paid administrative leave through the end of his contract.

According to the Arizona State University Police Department, the accuser came to them in October last year to file a report against Winslow for events that allegedly occurred six years ago.  After initiating an investigation of her statements, the ASU police notified the University of Utah Police in December of this investigation, but asked University of Utah police to not pursue an independent investigation until ASU completed its own.  According to a Utah spokesman, the Utah Athletic Department was not made aware of the ASU investigation until the story broke online on February 27.

Utah, however, was aware and independently investigated non-sexual abuse complaints about Winslow in the fall of 2012, about the same time that this victim was filing her report with the ASU police.  With this ongoing investigation into Winslow’s inappropriate behavior on the pool deck, the question arises – why wasn’t the ASU police report brought to the attention of the Utah Athletic Director in the fall?  Sources close to the victim’s family tell us that the victim was not prepared at that time to sustain the fallout from publicizing her decision to pursue prosecution of Winslow for sexually abusing her.  Given her concerns, she asked the ASU police to keep the report and investigation as confidential as possible until the investigation was complete.

The ASU police completed its investigation and now the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office will review that report and compile its own before the final decision is made to prosecute Greg Winslow.
