SFU’s Karilyn Quon Wins Two Events In Loss To Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Saint Francis swimming team fell 154-140 at Youngstown State on Friday night. The Red Flash earned first place finishes in 7 of the 14 events, including two individual wins by freshman Karilyn Quon (Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol). SFU freshmen combined for four first place finishes in individual events.

The Red Flash is now 8-4 in dual meets, after competing in its first meet after a month-long break. The Penguins improved to 3-2 in dual meets.

The meet started with the 400-yard Medley Relay.

Freshmen Aimee Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and Erin O’Neill (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) combined with juniors Katie Lafferty (Bremen, Ind./Bremen) and Natalie Tedjasukmana (Anaheim, Calif./Mater Dei) for a second place finish, with a time of 4:01.99.

In third place was the group of sophomore Marisa Daly (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan), sophomore Jessica Crumm (New Hampton, N.Y./Minisink Valley), junior Alicia Tiberino (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and junior Emma Karell (Norrtlje, Sweden/Tby Swim Club), who combined for a time of 4:12.43.

The Red Flash claimed three of the top five spots in the 1,000-yard Freestyle, led by Quon, who touched the wall in 10:43.03. Sophomore Fallon Nelson (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant) came in fourth, with a pace of 11:14.92, while junior Kasey Marks (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman) placed fifth, with a time of 11:31.39.

In the 200-yard Freestyle, Lafferty was Saint Francis’ top finisher, touching the wall in 1:58.03 for second place. Senior Paige McLean (Bolton, Ontario/St. Michael Catholic Secondary) was right behind in third place, with a time of 2:01.29, while freshman Emily Graziano (Jeannette, Pa./Penn Trafford) came in fifth, with a pace of 2:03.01.

Saint Francis earned four of the top five places in the 100-yard Backstroke. Baur claimed an individual win, with a time of 59.75. Tiberino placed third, with a time of 1:04.37, while freshman Kristin Fisher (Lakevilla, Conn./Housatonic Valley Regional) was fourth, with a pace of 1:06.31. Freshman Teresa Narduzzi (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) came in fifth, with a time of 1:06.32.

The Red Flash also owned the top finisher in the 100-yard Breaststroke as O’Neill led the field, touching the wall in 1:07.78. Crumm came in third, with a pace of 1:09.67, while freshman Kristen Toth (Silver Spring, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) was fifth, with a time of 1:12.05.

The 200-yard Butterfly including a second place finish by Karell, who touched the wall in 2:12.78. Sophomore Rory O’Dell (Chapel Hill, N.C./Northwood) finished in fourth, with a pace of 2:16.00.

Saint Francis earned the top two places in the 50-yard Freestyle, led by McLean, who finished with a season-best time of 24.87. Tedjasukmana followed in second place, with a time of 25.15.

Tedjasukmana then posted a season-best time in the 100-yard Freestyle as SFU’s top finisher in that event. She touched the wall in 54.49. O’Neill placed fifth in the event, with a pace of 56.11.

Quon’s performance in the 200-yard Backstroke resulted in the fifth-best time in program history in that event. The freshman set a new season-best time, finishing in 2:06.85. Baur came in third, with a time of 2:11.43.

In the 200-yard Breaststroke, Crumm was SFU’s top finisher, with a time of 2:31.37. O’Neill finished in fourth, with a pace of 2:31.62, while Toth was fifth, with a time of 2:35.14.

Laffety claimed an individual win in the 500-yard Freestyle, with a time of 5:16.37. McLean placed second in the race, with a time of 5:21.31. Nelson touched the wall in 5:33.20 to come in fifth.

In the 100-yard Butterfly, Karell finished second, with a pace of 1:00.76, while Tiberino placed third, with a time of 1:01.72.

SFU placed four in the top five of the 200-yard IM, led by Quon in second place, with a season-best time of 2:09.13. That is also the 10th-best time in program history in the 200-yard IM. O’Dell finished in third place, with a time of 2:18.88, while Toth was fourth, with a time of 2:19.09. Daly placed fifth, with a time of 2:21.59.

The 200-yard Freestyle Relay featured a first place finish by the Red Flash. The team of Lafferty, Baur, McLean and Tedjasukmana combined for a time of 1:39.75.

In third place was the group of Toth, Tiberino, Graziano and Quon, who teamed up for a time of 1:43.04.

The Red Flash is back in action on Saturday as it travels to Duquesne for a 2 p.m. meet. SFU fell 154-116 in last year’s meet against the Dukes.
