Shaine Casas Shares His Thought Process on Racing the 200 IM

2023 PRO SWIM SERIES – WESTMONT

Video captured by Barry Revzin.

Shaine Casas won the 100 fly convincingly in Westmont, posting a 51.0 on a very long finish. The Texas pro was a bit faster last month in Ft. Lauderdale, where he set the Pro Swim Series record at 50.8. When asked about swimming the 200 IM, Casas smiled and replied with “…nahhh”.

He recognizes that as a fan, it would be great to watch a 200 IM final with the likes of himself, Leon Marchand, and Carson Foster. But Casas just isn’t sure he wants toput his stock into that particular race at the moment.

I’m glad he decided to swim it. It was a great race between him and Leon. He even out split Licon on the breast leg (33.86 vs. 34.34).

I’m sure everyone knows this, but after not swimming the 200 IM at world trials last summer he went 1:55.24 at nationals a month after worlds, just 0.02 seconds behind Marchand’s winning time at worlds. This made him the 7th fastest ever in the event. He’s also the 7th fastest ever in the 100 fly, but in back he’s 17th in the 100 and 20th in the 200.

That said, as a swimmer you have the events you care most about, and the ones you’re best at, and those don’t always overlap… Read more »

I neglected to mention that he’s 4th all time in the 50 back. He doesn’t appear to be top 25 in the 50 fly.

Shane has a long beautiful fly stroke but that makes the touch at the walls and finish tricky to judge. Pablo Morales, Michael Phelps also had issues with being too long or too short at the walls. Sun Yang said his turns were hard to judge. Coach Richard Quick said Pablo practiced his finishes after every practice until he got it down. He should ask Eddie about that story.

If MA isn’t racing the event anymore, then I could see Casas beating out Kalisz for 2nd at trials.

Isn’t Casas’s fastest time faster than Foster’s?

Casas is 1:55.24
Foster is 1:55.71

That time would have gotten him silver at last year’s worlds, almost gold. I would argue he could beat out Foster for 1st. I don’t really understand his dilemma between the 200 back and 200 IM when he is clearly more competitive in the latter.

If Fina and Olympics paid purses in a way other races do, they could get the race fans want to watch.

But fans and joes have to watch…
