Shane Ryan Heads Up Irish Squad For Short Course World Championships

While some nations such as Japan and Australia are pulling out of the 2021 FINA Short Course World Championships, others are going into Abu Dhabi with full force.

Swim Ireland has just announced their team for the upcoming competition taking place this December in Abu Dhabi, with a squad of 12 set to improve upon the nation’s 17th place finish in the overall medal table from the 2018 edition in Hangzhou, China.

The man who took 50m backstroke bronze 3 years ago, Shane Ryan, will once again be competing, joined by Olympic semi-finalist Daniel Wiffen and multi-national record holder Danielle Hill. Additional Abu Dhabi-bound athletes include Brendan Hyland, Finn McGeever, Jack McMillan and Ellen Walshe.

Swim Ireland also revealed its European Championships team, including Eoin Corby, Molly Mayne and Grace Hodgins among its 3-swimmer list of constituents.

Selection meets from which these World Championships and European Championships squads were chosen included the 2021 Swim Ireland Performance Meet, the 2020 Olympic Games, the 2021 European Junior Championships, as well as the 2021 Irish Summer National Championships.

Athletes’ times across both short course meters and long course meters were taken into account with squad selections.

National Performance Director Jon Rudd said, “After what was our most successful Olympic Games in at least 25 years, we are delighted to be able to return to some high quality international racing, something that eluded us during 2020 and 2021 as we approached Tokyo.

“There’s very much an eye on the future with some of these athletes and they all met what we felt was a stringent and robust Selection Policy to make these teams.

“Some athletes have been unable to take up their places, particularly for Kazan, as November is not an easy period for those in full-time education, but for those who can take the opportunity, we will look forward to some fast and exciting short course racing across the two meets.”

I feel like this story buried the lead. I didn’t know that Australia had officially said they’re sending no one. How did I miss that? lol

I knew that they cancelled the trials, but didn’t realise that meant there was no team at all. Is it possible for individual swimmers to represent Australia or are there literally going to be none there?

They’re trying to get their excuses ready for the flawed selection process
