The Saskatoon city council approved a $650,000 budget to go towards upgrading the heating and ventilation systems at the Shaw Centre.

The Shaw Centre is one of Canada’s best facilities, hosting events such as the Speedo Western Canadian Championships last year and many other high level meets. The facility boasts an impressive 1o lane Olympic pool as well as a diving facility, warmup pools, a large viewing area and much more.

Of the $650,000 budget $475,000 are going towards upgrading the heating and ventilation system whereas the remaining sum will be used to add a new 70 ton chiller to the venue.

At last years Speedo Western Canadian Championships there were some very evident problems with the ventilation system, as we know from events like the 2013 Winter Junior National Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina where Caleb Dressel ended up in the hospital with breathing problems.

Canadian Nationals will be held at the Shaw Centre beginning on July 16 and finishing on the 19th. The estimated finishing date of all the upgrades is June 5th, giving it plenty of time to be ready for the Canadian Nationals.

No evacuators nor ground level exhausts visible. Four very large ceiling fans with variable speeds installed above stands, six ground level ceiling fans, duct work to connect to huge chiller located outdoors, and some duct connections. Air quality cooler in stands and lower humidity when system is on. However, “chlorine smell” from chloramines still present. Some like myself now feel eye irritation rather than just lingering facial irritation and a smell that washes off of skin and bathing suits. Anyone know where an upgrade worked really well?
