Shayna Jack Overtakes Bronte Campbell’s 100 Free Age Group Record

2017 AUSTRALIAN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

While competing in her first event of the 2017 Australian National Swimming Championships, 18-year-old Shayna Jack ripped a shiny new personal best in the women’s 100m freestyle. Amidst a heavily stacked prelims field including reigning world record holder Cate Campbell, reigning world champion Bronte Campbell and Olympic bronze medalist in the 200m freestyle, Emma McKeon, Jack held her own, stopping the clock at a mighty 53.60 to earn the 4th seed headed into tonight’s finals.

Women’s 100m freestyle top 4 prelims times:

  1. Cate Campbell – 52.78
  2. Emma McKeon – 53.26
  3. Bronte Campbell – 53.54
  4. Shayna Jack – 53.60

Entering this week’s meet in Brisbane, Jack’s personal best sat at the 54.11 she collected at the NSW State Open Championships earlier this year. As such, this morning’s outing marks the first time the Commercial swimmer has dipped beneath the 54-second barrier. Splits for Jack’s performance this morning were 25.62/27.98. With Jack having clocked a time under the 53.92 qualifying mark for the World Championships that bodes extremely well for the Aussie 4x100m freestyle relay sans C1 in Budapest.

Jack’s 53.60 also took over Campbell’s Aussie age group record for 18-year-olds. C2 (Bronte Campbell) set the previous record of 53.72 back in 2013, so Jack shaved over a tenth off of that to now be positioned atop the age group top times. Taking it one step further, she also now slides into the 8th fastest performers slot in the event in Australian history.

Jack’s progression this season has been one of the very few positive notes in an AUS season that has been underwhelming to say the very least.

Given C1 should win, it will be interesting to see the time behind her and whether anyone else is sub53. It’s hard to know just where C2 is at, both physically and mentally, so I’m leaning towards McKeon for 2nd money. It would be helpful if there were other sub54s for relay purposes although its not out of the question that they MAY approach C1 to make the trip to Budapest, even only for this and medley relay.

Will be interesting to see whether this flows on to Jack’s other events. With Barratt retired… Read more »

Nice time by Cate Campbell. Regardless of Olympic result, she is the greatest female sprinter to ever live. Her times speak for themselves

When she hangs up her goggles (unless she wins in Tokyo) it is going to be hard to know exactly where CCampbell stands in the women’s 100m pantheon…she has the most swims in the top 50 probably of any swimmer in history in any event, world long and short course world records,1 world title, but….

I think that Cate’s biggest achievement is – breaking the Mens WR in the blue ribbon event within 50 years . That is a milestone for swimming , for science & human development .

GOAT swimmers have world records and gold medals in their individual races. That is why we can say Michael Phelps is the GOAT. If she doesn’t win in Olympic gold in 2020, she may end up the fastest sprinter never to win an individual gold medal.
