Shchukin Shines at Pitt

St. Bonaventure Meet Results

Viacheslav Shchukin helped lead the Bonnies to a third place finish at the University of Pittsburgh on Sunday in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The meet lasted three days and on the final day, the Bonnies ended up with a total of 534 points. They fell short of The University of Cincinnati who had a total of 1125 points, and the winners, The University of Pittsburgh, who had a total of 1455.5 points.

Freshman Michael White and junior Ripley Danner struck first for the Bonnies, placing 9th and 10th in the championship final of the 200 yard IM. White came in at 1:54.34 and Danner touched in right behind with a time of 1:54.74. In the Preliminaries of the 50 yard freestyle, Sophomore Viacheslav Shchukin placed fourth with a time of 20.80 and senior Jimmy Martin came in ninth with a time of 21.18. In the championship race of the 50 yard freestyle, Shchukin placed first in the event, registering a time of 20.42.

Later in the day, Michael White would register another top ten finish. In the preliminaries of the 400 yard IM, White touched in with a time of 4:09.61, good enough for ninth place. In the championship race, he placed one spot better with an eighth place finish and a time of 4:17.52. Martin and Shchukin would later receive another top ten finish, this time in the 100 yard butterfly, placing sixth and ninth in the preliminaries and then finishing sixth and seventh in the championship race. Martin registered a time of 51.48 in the prelims and Shchukin came in with a time of 51.65. In the final, Martin recorded a time of 50.86, narrowly beating Shchukin who had a time of 50.92.Ripley Danner placed second in the prelims with a time of 50.44 and in the championship race, Junior Matthew Rochna had a consolation ninth place finish with a time of 51.20.

Later in the Afternoon, Matt Schutt and Ripley Danner would place in the 100 yard backstroke prelims and championship final. Danner came in tenth in the preliminary round with a time of 59.40 and Schutt placed ninth in the championship round, recording a time of 58.47. Sophomore Michael Pilyugin was the lone Bonnie to have a top finish in the 200 yard backstroke, coming in ninth with a time of 1:52.31.

Viacheslav Shchukin and Matthew Rochna would finish the weekend for the Bonnies in the 100 yard freestyle and the 200 yard butterfly. In the preliminaries of the 100 yard freestyle, Shchukin placed fourth in the event with a time of 45.51. In the championship race, Shchukin beat his previous time by almost two points with a time of 43.90, placing him first in the event. In the prelims of the 200 yard butterfly, Rochna came in ninth in the event, registering a time of 1:57.38. In the finals of the race, Rochna came in ninth again with a time of 1:53.91.

Only one Bonaventure relay team saw success today, placing third in the 400 yard freestyle relay. The team of Michael Pilyugin, David Paccapaniccia, Jimmy Martin, and Viacheslav Shchukin touching in with a time of 3:01.97.

The Bonnies will return to the pool on December 6th when they travel to Akron, OH for the Akron.
