Shegos Sets 1-Meter Record in Illinois’ I193-107 Win Over Indiana State

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois swimming and diving team picked up top times in 11 of 14 swimming events, while sophomore Taylor Shegos broke a school record in the 1-meter dive to lead the Illini to a 193-107 victory over Indiana State Friday afternoon at the ARC Pool. The Orange and Blue has a quick turnaround, as the team will travel to take on host Northwestern and UIC on Saturday, Oct. 12. Meet competition begins at 11 a.m CT.

“I thought that, with it being the first meet of the season, the thing that I really wanted to see from a young team was how they came out from the start and carry along that energy all the way through the meet,” said head coach Sue Novitsky. “I thought they did a great job being engaged and backing up their teammates and just racing and competing hard no matter what event they were in.”

Senior Kristin Anderson had a strong performance on the day as she touched the wall first in the 100 freestyle (:52.24) and 200 freestyle (1:53.82). The Palatine, Ill., native was also a part of the winning 400 medley relay team (3:52.69) and the 200 freestyle relay team (1:36.60). Junior Jimena Martinez finished first with a career-best time of 10:30.92 in the 1000 freestyle and a time of 4:33.45 in the 400 individual medley.

Senior Jamie Kolar and sophomore Abby Cabush each placed first in the 100 backstroke (:57.64) and the 500 freestyle (5:05.24), respectively.

The youthful Illini impressed in their first collegiate experience, as freshman Divya Kale came away with her first-career race victory in the 100 backstroke, finishing with a time of 1:05.80. Kale also earned a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:27.29. Freshman Kaleigh Haworth took the top time of 2:24.66 in the 200 breaststroke, while Athena Salafatinos was first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:04.45.

On the Boards
Shegos earned the top score in 3-meter diving competition and in 1-meter diving competition, as the Fenton, Mich., native posted a score of 281.02 in 3-meter diving competition and a 299.47 in 1-meter diving competition, which broke a previous school record of 298.71 held by Britni Fisher in 2012.

Sophomore diver Madelyn Crosby place second in both in 3-meter (245.47) and 1-meter (263.17), while freshman Erin Young totaled scores of 218.10 and 238.57 in each event in her collegiate debut.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Indiana State Women’s Swimming and Diving team fell to The Fighting Illini on Friday evening at the Arc Pool, 193-107.

Surging Sycamores
Three Sycamores earned individual victories, while the eight take second through 15 events.

Margaret Gray picked up the first win of the evening for the blue and white in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:08.08.

Senior Alex Malmborg claimed first for the Trees in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.02. While, Ashleigh Sinks dominated in the 100-yard butterfly claiming first place with a time of 57.90.

Freshmen Rhiannon Wonzy and Andrea Putrimas tied for second in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:31.58. Freshman Sarah Moreau claimed second place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:54.14. Emily Webb was right behind her claiming third with a time of 1:56.40.

Senior Kendall Hansen picked up second place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.91.

Freshman Britney Meienburg put herself in the record book for 1-meter diving with a score of 213.67 putting herself fourth in program history. Meienburg scored 185.75 in 3-meter diving putting her fifth all time. While Kera Shelton scored 204.75 in the 1-meter and 210.60 in the 3-meter dive.

Indiana State will come back home to host a Double Dual Meet against University of Indianapolis and Conference foe Missouri State on Saturday and Sunday Oct. 19-20th. Saturday will have a start of 4pm EST and Sunday will start at 10am EST at the Vigo County Aquatic Center.
