Coming off their training camp in Arizona, the Simon Fraser University women’s swim team beat Seattle University while the men fell just short against the Redhawks in the final home meet of the season on Saturday at the Margaret and Paul Savage Pool on campus.
The Clan women won 125-76 while the men’s team came within 23 points, losing 112-89.
The Clan women won the first and last event of the meet, taking 9 of 11 races.
With the first relay being the women’s 400 meter medley relay, Jessie Gibson, Meaghan Frenks, Kaleigh Sharkey and Erin Lawrance touched the wall first in 4:18.54, starting the meet off with a win. They closed it with a first place finish in the final 200 meter freestyle relay, with Sharkey, Alicia Kan, Lauren Diel, and Kristen Olvet winning in 1:49.98.
Kristen Olvet and Mackenzie Hamill displayed strong swims, both winning the distance events of the day, including the 800 and 400 meter freestyles, in times of 9:14.60 and 8:29.40 in the 800 and 4:33.25 and 4:05.65 in the 400, respectively. These were excellent swims for both individuals, especially at this time in their training.
Lawrance took home first place in the 200 meter freestyle with a 2:06.89, as well as a win in the 200 meter butterfly with a 2:21.85, where she was closely followed by freshman Sharkey, just a few seconds behind in a time of 2:23.81.
Gibson swam a great race in the 200 meter IM, touching in 2:21.98, followed closely behind by senior Sidney Peake, touching the wall at 2:28.84. Gibson also won the 200 meter backstroke, with great splitting, touching the wall in a 2:16.81, finishing off her individual races for the day.
Coming off a winning streak in the previous cycle, Rolando Hernandez continued on by bringing home the first place finish in the 200 meter freestyle in 1:53.97 as well as the 100 meter freestyle with a 51.83 ahead of the Redhawk competitors. Freshman Amar Fejzic, the lone SFU swimmer in the 200 meter butterfly, took home a very close race against two Redhawks, by touching the wall first in 2:08.69, just milliseconds before the Redhawks closed in on him.
Freshman Jayden Cole closed in on the 200 meter backstroke, touching the wall first in a 2:08.02.
At the second break of the meet, seniors Meaghan Frenks, Sidney Peake, Megan Barrack, Graham Campbelland Daniel Kilmaster were recognized in front of their teammates and the crowd. Having demonstrated leadership and dedication to the program, they were thanked and offered flowers by Coach Liam Donnellyand assistant coach Mandi Smith.
After the seniors were recognized, Frenks rushed over to complete her final race of the day, the 200 meter breastroke, where she went on to win by over 10 seconds, in a time of 2:36.88, putting on a great performance in her final swim at home.
The Clan is back in action in two weeks in Victoria for a peak meet for some, where the team is hoping to qualify as many swimmers to continue on to the NCAA DII Championships held in Greesnboro, NC, in March.

WOMEN: Seattle University women’s swimming fell, 125-76, at Simon Fraser Saturday afternoon. Paige Treff and Allison Plamondon both won races for SU at Margaret & Paul Savage Pool.
“Paige and Allison were highlights for us today,” said Coach Craig Nisgor. “This meet gives us a good idea of what we need to work on in the next few weeks.”
Plamondon and Treff recorded 1-2 finishes in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle Saturday. Treff won the 50 freestyle with a 27.51 time, while Plamondon was just behind at 27.63. In the 100 freestyle, Plamondon took gold with a 59.74 performance. Treff was second with a 1:00.08 time.
Emily Bakewell finished second in the 800 freestyle. The freshman clocked in at 9:48.28 to take silver.
In the 200 backstroke, Madi Lydig put up a time of 2:26.79, good for second place.
Darian Himes took silver in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:47.28 effort. She also recorded a 2:29.14 to notch a third-place finish in the 200 IM.
In the 200 butterfly, Sherlyn Devadason contributed a 2:25.40 effort, taking third in the event.
Jayna Van Stone was the third-place finisher in the 200 freestyle. She touched in 2:12.20. in the 400 freestyle, Van Stone also claimed third with a 4:44.84.
The Redhawks finish their regular-season slate with a 4-11 record. The WAC Championships will be held in Houston from Feb. 21-24.
MEN:
Seattle University men’s swimming won, 112-89, at Simon Fraser Saturday afternoon. Ben Nussbaum won a pair of individual events to lead the Redhawks at Margaret & Paul Savage Pool.
“Ben had some really strong races today,” said Coach Craig Nisgor. “We had a lot of second and third place finishes to help us win today. We still have a lot to clean up as we get ready for Houston (and the WAC Championships) next month.”
Nussbaum won gold in the 200 IM and 200 breaststroke Saturday. The senior produced a 2:10.22 to win by over four seconds in the 200 IM. He also touched first in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:21.31 finish.
Greg Raper won the 50 freestyle, logging a 23.80 time. Isaac Parker and Ian Keane claimed the next two spots in the race.
In the 200 freestyle, Alex Roderick posted a 1:58.07 to place second. Mitchell Crossen took third with a 1:58.81 showing.
Jack Baldoni and Shawn Fujii finished second and third, respectively, in the 200 butterfly. Baldoni touched in 2:08.93, while Fujii compiled a 2:11.26 time.
Raper and Crossen touched 2-3 in the 100 freestyle. Raper swam a 51.87 and Crossen touched in 52.57 Saturday.
The 400 freestyle final saw Roderick and Austin Barnard take second and third, respectively. Roderick swam a 4:09.65
Morgan Montemayor’s 200 backstroke showing of 2:08.07 was good for silver Saturday.
Austin Barnard’s time of 8:44.91 was good for third in the 800 freestyle Saturday.
In the 400 medley relay, Montemayor, Nussbaum, Baldoni, and Crossen combined to win with a time of 3:52.55.
Montemayor, Baldoni, Parker, and Raper teamed up to claim gold in the 200 freestyle relay. The group tallied a 1:35.91 to win the event.
SU concludes its regular season with a 4-6 record in dual competition. It will prepare for next month’s WAC Championships. The meet will run from Feb. 21-24 in Houston.
