Simon Winther Resigns at Top Danish Club; Spanish Coach Rovira Replacement

Simon Winther has resigned as the head coach of the SIGMA Swim Club in Denmark, and will be replaced by Carles Subirana Rovira.

Danish Swimming, after a wildly successful 2012 season (that thus far has rolled into 2013), is currently going through a near-total turnover of its elite coaching ranks. That includes the replacement of its National Team Director, National Training Center coach, and the loss of many of its top club coaches.

Rovira takes over the club that just this past weekend won the Danish Elite Team Championships. Among the elite athletes who have recently represented the club (though with all of the turnover, it’s hard to peg down exactly who still does), include Lotte FriisMathias GydesenMads Glaesner, and Pernille Blume.

Rovita was the coach of the Spanish Swimming High Performance Center, where he worked with the great Mireaia Belmonte from 2007-2009, and also worked with Spanish stars like Rafael MunozAschwin WildeboerErika Villaecija, and Duane da Rocha.

Aschwin Wildeboer, it will be noted, is the son of the last National Team head coach Paulus Wildeboer. Paulus Wildeboer’s wife previously held a high-level job within the Sigma organization, though she traveled with her husband to Australia after the Olympics for his new role.

Rovira’s most recent success is as the coach of Francisco Jose Hervas Jodar, who was an open water Olympian in 2008 and 2012.
