Simone Manuel Scorches 20.45 Free Split on 200 Medley Relay

2018 WOMEN’S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Swimmers lined up for an exciting race in the 200 medley relay finals on day 3 of the 2018 Women’s NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Stanford’s Simone Manuel had a huge swim for her team, anchoring in 20.45 to turn a close race into a convincing Cardinal victory. Manuel’s split was the fastest in history by over 3 tenths. The former fastest split ever was a 20.78 done by Manuel at the 2017 Pac-12 Championships.

At the start of the race, Indiana’s Ally Rockett and Stanford’s Ally Howe tied in 23.54 on backstroke. The Hoosiers’ Lilly King gave Indiana a sizeable lead, posting the fastest 50 breast split ever in 25.38. Indiana maintained their lead through fly by over half a second, but it was all over once Manuel hit the water. She quickly closed the gap and surged ahead to help the Cardinal to a 1:33.11. That was an American Record by a second and they ended up over 7 tenths ahead of the field.
