Siobhan-Marie O’Connor destroyed her own British national record tonight in the women’s 200 IM to take the Olympic silver, pounding out 2:06.88 to outdo her record 2:07.57 set yesterday in semifinals.
She was just .30 back from the gold medal Katinka Hosszu‘s 2:06.58 and a full two seconds ahead of third-place Maya DiRado, who finished in 2:08.79.
You can see a split comparison between O’Connor’s British record setting semifinal swim and her second British record setting finals swim below:
Swim | 50 | 100 | 150 | 200 |
200 IM Semis | 27.56 | 1:00.14 (32.58) | 1:36.70
(36.56) |
2:07.57 (30.87) |
200 IM Finals | 27.23 | 59.61 (32.30) | 1:36.49 (36.88) | 2:06.88 (30.39) |
This was the 20-year-old O’Connor’s first-ever Olympic medal, though she is no stranger to British national records. She set a new national mark in the 100 breast earlier this month at Scottish Championships, a 1:06.34 that would have been fast enough to score her fourth in the Olympic final last night. She competed in her home Olympics in 2012, swimming the 100 breast and finishing 21st overall as a sixteen-year-old.
Brexit swimmers are doing very well, basically swimming at least as well as their form going into the Olympics.
The difference for O’Connor this year – Her backstroke and developing the strength to hold onto her freestyle down the last 50m. Wonder if her fella CWH has been giving her a few tips hahs
Carlin & O’Connor flying – Dave McNulty and Bath having a huge meet. Can his next charge, Andrew Willis, grant him another Olympic medallist?
I don’t think you’ve got her final splits in there?
Fixed and updated.
Thank you!
