CHINESE OLYMPIC TRIALS #1
- Friday, April 30th – Saturday, May 8th
- Qingdao, China
- Primary Olympic Qualifier
- LCM (50m)
- Results via Asian Media
It’s time to check in on the Chinese Olympic roster for this summer’s Games in Tokyo as we’ve now seen two days’ worth of finals action in Qingdao.
As a reminder, these Chinese Olympic Trials represent the first of two official qualifying meets for the nation’s swimmers, with any remaining squad slots up for grabs at the secondary Chinese Olympic Trials on the books from May 31st – June 1st.
An additional qualifying opportunity is good news for Olympic bronze medalist Fu Yuanhui who was disqualified for a false start in yesterday’s women’s 100m backstroke finals. It’s also good news for 400m IM Olympic champion from 2012, Ye Shiwen, who wound up 3rd in the event here, with just one swimmer qualifying.
There’s also a chance that China’s most successful swimmer, Sun Yang, may indeed make an appearance at that 2nd Trials meet. The controversial freestyle ace’s second hearing with the Court of Arbitration for Sport looms later this month.
Focusing on this meet, however, below are the strict qualifiers through day 2 finals.
Chinese Olympic Qualifiers in Individual Events:
- Wang Shun – men’s 400m IM
- Yu Yiting – women’s 400m IM
- Zhang Yufei – women’s 100m fly
- Yan Zibei – men’s 100m breast
- Li Bingjie – women’s 400m free
- Tang Muhan – women’s 400m free
If hkg competed together they could be favorites for Gold with haughey
Maybe not being qualified for the 400FR event is good thing that happened to Wang Jianjiahe. The first ever Olympic competition at 1500 distance can get as strong and exciting as competition at middle distances (200, 400). Three swimmers have personal best under 15:50 and there is a big group of swimmers going right behind them. Swimming two tense 400 races where she doesn’t have good chance for podium may happen to be just a waste of energy. But at 1500 she is among leaders and that is where her focus should be. And don’t forget that 24 years old Katie Ledecky won’t be that much fresh having competing already to her limits at 400 and 200 events (5 races… Read more »
Nobody in the world is going to go anywhere close to Ledeckys 1500. Doesn’t matter if she’s been swimming in every session prior to the race or not.
That is what I’d like to see. But to take my worries completely away I would like to see her under 15:35 and 8:11 in season. That was her traditional in-season range. The times she showed so far this year are too close to the competition zone.
Also I didn’t like her reaction on 3:59.25 at 400 in Mission Viejo. Based on her sprint form and 4:01 in prelim race it looked like she expected to be under 3:59.
I’m curious if she mimicked the load of Olympic week at practice. Dedicating one week of her training to check how Olympic load feels like. If she did would be interesting to know where the most difficult part is.… Read more »
There were plenty of comments here at swimswam stating that there is no such a thing like successful long distance swimmer after 19th birthday. A lot of statistics were provided to support this view.
Two points keep my hope high.
1. Katie Ledecky is very unique phenomenon in swimming setting her personal best (world record) at the age of 21. So the statistics based on historical data may not applicable in her case.
2. The second best ever performer at this distance set her personal best at the age of 25. But she retired soon after.
Ledecky (24) – 15:20
Quadarella (22) – 15:40
Wang (18) – 15.45
Koehler (26) – 15:48
Bull.
Check out Lauren Boyle at the 2015 World Aquatics Championships in Kazan, Russia.
Calendar Year 2021
Women’s 1500 meter freestyle
Ledecky – 15:40.55 (04/11/2021)
Quadarella – 15:57:03 (04/03/2021)
The same month of the same year. End of story.
Don’t you miss anything? This is the place for story tellers. And this is the story about Simone Quadarella in 2019:
April – 16:04.02
July – 15:40.89
Sure in-season times is also an information and there is no reason to ignore it. But I wouldn’t make the end of the story based on this information only.
No one has ever come close to Katie Ledecky’s first world record (15:36.53) in the women’s 1500 meter freestyle except for Lotte Friis in the race that set the aforementioned world record at the 2013 FINA World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
“Never ever” it’s all about past. But nothing is staying unchanged in competitive swimming.
A female swimmer cannot call herself a sprinter now if she isn’t under 53 sec at 100. But not that far ago Missy Franklin held the American record at 53 4
Same thing is happening in 1500. Thanks to Katie Ledecky and especially after this event became an Olympic one we will see soon that swimming under 15:40 will be a requirement to be competitive.
In three years in Paris to be a finalist the swimmer will need to perform better than 15:50. And podium will be under 15:40.
China won silver in the women’s 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay at the 2017 FINA World Aquatics Championships. However, China can be incredibly inconsistent as the performances in relays proved at the 2019 FINA World Aquatics Championships.
If fu was on 58 form their women medley would be good
As world champs in 2019, Xu Jiayu and Sun Yan were preselected for the Olympics, obviously in Sun’s case, it’s all about the results of the new hearing. I guess he will still need a Fina certified race to post a qualified A time
