Sjöström, Hosszu, Le Clos and Detti to Race at Berlin World Cup Stop

2017 FINA WORLD CUP TOUR – Berlin

  • August 6th – 7th, 2017
  • Berlin, Germany
  • Results (no start lists yet)

Though we don’t want to take your attention away from the 2017 World Championships at hand in Budapest right now, we’re doing it anyways! Believe it or not, the FINA World Cup series literally starts next week on August 2nd in Moscow, Russia. Information on that meet has not been released yet, but Germany’s swimming federation, Deutscher Schwimm-Verband (DSV), has given some of the big names expected to compete at the Berlin stop which will run from August 6th to the 7th.

Sarah SjöstromKatinka HosszuChad Le ClosFederica Pellegrini and Gabriele Detti will all be racing in Berlin, according to DSV.

These are five international stars who have each won gold at Worlds this week. Sjöström is perhaps the hottest name right now, having smashed the 100 free WR leading off Sweden’s 4×100 free relay on day 1 of the meet and following up with a dominant gold in the 100 fly. Hosszu won a gold in the 200 IM and a bronze tonight in the 200 fly, while Detti earned the 800 free gold coming off of a very strategic race and Le Clos went all out to take the 200 fly gold.

Pellegrini took home the win in the 200 free, executing a stellar surge on the final 50 of the race to pass Katie Ledecky and Emma McKeon, who ended up tying for silver. Pellegrini already announced after her gold that she’d be retiring from the 200 free at major competition, but start lists have not come out yet, so it’s unknown what her lineup will look like post-Budapest.

Besides these five stars, DSV says that the entirety of the German team at Worlds right now will be racing in Berlin. Among the 14 members, listed in full below, is 200 fly Worlds silver medalist Franziska Hentke.

Of course, the first stop of the 2017 World Cup tour will be in Moscow, Aug. 2-3, just two days after the conclusion of Worlds. Following Berlin will be stops in Eindhoven (Aug. 10-11), Doha (Sept. 22-23), Dubai (Sept. 26-27), Hong Kong (Sep. 30-Oct. 1), Beijing (Nov. 10-11), Tokyo (Nov. 14-15), and Singapore (Nov. 18-19).

I dont understand? Hosszu went against FINA and created the swimmer’s union because of the ridiculous changes FINA did on the world cup circuit but she will compete and take part on the same circuit? I know that there she get most of her earnings but what the point of going against something and than take part in it? If they really want to make FINA to listen to them they need to hurt them where FINA get money which is from advertising. No big stars on those competition, no sponsors. quite dissapoint from her and the other stars who will swim there ☹

Fina’s money came from international race like WC, EC, Pan,ecc… World cup means nothing to them.
And the only way to threat them is by forming a big strong union and then make a bold statement, you can’t make the other way around.

She is not going to fight FINA. She was a golden child of FINA when there was a need to promote Wold Cup. This business model (World Cup) doesn’t work as sponsors with FINA were expected. Good for them to realize that. That caused changes and there is no need in Hosszu with her “Iron” bs anymore.
That lost of earnings pushed Hosszu or her husband into offensive politics. There was no need for that before. And btw, she is not against FINA at all. She doesn’t want to replace it with something different. No, she just wants to be the part of FINA but with her vote and influential opinion. The union isn’t a replacement to FINA. She… Read more »
