Sjostrom Rips 25.04 50 Fly On Day One Of Swim Open Stockholm

2023 SWIM OPEN STOCKHOLM

While competing on day one of the 2023 Swim Open Stockholm, Olympic champion Sarah Sjostrom crushed a ridiculous 50m fly time of 25.04 to take the gold.

After establishing herself as the top-seeded swimmer of the morning with a casual heats swim of 25.63, Sjostrom engaged an entirely other gear to fire off a time just .11 outside of her gold medal-winning performance at last year’s World Championships.

There in Budapest, Sjostrom clocked 24.95 to get the job done for gold.

Entering this competition, 29-year-old Sjostrom already ranked as the top performer in the world this season, courtesy of her 25.25 posted last month in France. Her 25.04 outing here simply further separates the icon from the rest of the world, with the next-closest competitor thus far this season represented by China’s Zhang Yufei‘s time of 25.32 also from last month.

Sjostrom already owns the top 24 performances in history in this LCM 50m fly event, including the World Record of 24.43 she produced at the 2014 Swedish National Championships.

Additional Winners

  • Sjostrom also took on the women’s 50m back tonight where she found success again. She logged a result of 28.10 to lead Poland’s Adela Piskerska. Piskerska touched in 28.20 with both women scoring World Championships-worthy marks.
  • Ukraine’s Oleksandr Zheltyakov got it done for gold in the men’s 200m back, posting 1:57.18 as the only sub-2:00 swimmer. That ties his own national record he performed at last year’s Hungarian Championships. His time also qualifies him for the World Championships while checking him in as the 9th fastest swimmer in the world this season.
  • Estonian swimmer Daniel Zaitsev posted a time of 23.46 to take the men’s 50m fly, a Fukuoka-worthy result.
  • Belgium’s Lucie Hanquet topped the women’s 1500m free podium in 16:44.70, the only result under 17:00 this evening.
  • We reported on Daniel Wiffen‘s new Irish national record in the men’s 400m free, which you can read here.

It’s crazy how for Sarah this is a solid time but if it is anyone else, they would be the 3rd fastest of all time.

katie now has to compete with McIntosh and Titmus in the 400 and while she still undoubtedly dominates the 800, Sjostrom owns the top 24 all-time 50 fly swims and is the only woman EVER under 25.00. the time percentage difference between Sjostrom and everyone else is crazy because shes THAT dominant in a 50! dont get me wrong, Katie is still Katie, i just wanted to give credit to Sarah where its due

percentage difference is also far bigger than in the 800/1500, where the corresponding times would be 8:17.49 and like 15:44.5

Not an Olympic event, and Katie’s shortest event is 4x as long.

the women’s 1500 wasn’t even an olympic event until Tokyo so let’s not act like Olympic events are the only ones that matter💀 the 50 fly LCM has a rich history at World Champs on both the men’s and women’s side so I’d say its more than relevant
