It was her race to lose, as Swedish sprint super star Sarah Sjostrom powered her way to the top of the podium in the women’s 100m butterfly today in Kazan. Having blasted a new world record of 55.74 in the semi-finals of the event, Sjostrom surprised even herself by registering yet an even lower mark in the finals, coming into the wall in a final time of 55.64 for the victory.
“My goal was to break the world record in the semi-final. I’m very happy, though…It’s always good to show myself I can improve in the finals even if there are more nerves.” Improve she did, as she simply dominated the field and scored a three-peat 100 butterfly world championship title, having won twice before, in 2009 and 2011.
Sjostrom is scheduled to swim the 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle events later in the meet where she is highly favored to be in the mix for gold in each.
