Continuing with her world record onslaught from the 2017 World Championships in Budapest, Swedish speedster Sarah Sjostrom wasted no time wreaking havoc on the women’s short course meters women’s 50 freestyle mark in Moscow.
While competing at the first stop of this season’s World Cup, Sjostrom fired off a big 23.10 to take down Dutch swimmer Ranomi Kromowidjojo‘s previous short course record of 23.24 earned both in Eindhoven as well as at the 2015 Duel in the Pool. Kromowidjojo was also in this race, clocking 23.39 for silver. Australia’s former world record holder in the 100 LCM freestyle, Cate Campbell, claimed bronze here in Moscow in 23.96.
Heading into this meet Sjostrom’s fastest SCM 50 freestyle was the 23.55, which won her the Swedish short course title back in 2015.
For Sjostrom, breaking the world record is par for the course, as the 23-year-old Olympic champion cracked the long course 100 freestyle record in Budapest, producing the world’s first-ever sub-52 second mark in 51.71 on a relay leadoff before ultimately taking silver in the event behind America’s Simone Manuel. Sjostrom also then nailed a WR in the 50 freestyle, taking the mark down to 23.67 in semis before taking gold.
Truly Sweden’s golden girl, Sjostrom now owns an incredible 7 world records, further establishing herself as the world’s premier sprinter:
50 freestyle LCM – 23.67
100 freestyle LCM – 51.71
50 fly LCM – 24.43
100 fly LCM – 55.48
50 freestyle SCM – 23.10
200 freestyle SCM – 1:50.78
100 butterfly SCM – 54.61
Just saw the video, man her underwaters… she could be sooo much faster
Where did you see that? Thanks.
Nobody is perfect.
Sjostrom also finished second to Hosszu in the 100 IM in 57.10, making her the second fastest preformer in history their. Not bad considering how awful her breast is. If she could get that stroke down she could take the 200 IM title from Hosszu. Of course with her considering getting rid of 100s this is unlikely.
Sojstrom, Ledecky and Hosszu three of the most dominant women in history all at the same time. Amazing times we live in.
Yes, only 0.08 was the difference, Sarah was leading after the 1st 50. There will be some WRs in that event too. 200IM will be interesting too. But only in SC. LC is Katinka’s.
Her 51.71 was a relay lead off, not a prelim swim!
Anyone know what sjostrom’s pb in the 100m free SC?
51.24. Which hardly seems fast enough given…51.71. I’d expect her to beat that.
According the start list she is opting out of the 100m free in Moscow.
She can join them directly in the final, according to the new FINA rules. She will swim it.
Thanks for that, I totally missed that she had nominated that event for direct access to the final.
wow! congrats sarah!
Wonder what times she can achieve this SC season with her new sprint profile? Last time she really went for it was in 2014 when 200 free was still a big part of her schedule. So we can throw her old PBs away already, with the exception of 100 fly which is pretty good as it stands.
My estimates:
50 free: 22.9 (LCM 23.67)
100 free: 49.9 (LCM 51.71)
50 fly: 24.0 (LCM 24.43)
100 fly: 54.2 (LCM 55.48)
Wondering how much WRs Dressel can demolish in SC ??
It would be cool to see him do SC World Championships next year. He can do his traditional schedule of 50 fly, 100 fly, 50 free, and 100 free or maybe some off events like 100 IM, 200 IM, 200 free, 50 breast, and 100 breast. He might be the one to end Chad’s dominance in the fly events.
I’m not sure he can demolish any – they are at a very high level and Dressel may very well be better in LC, his turns are relatively his weak point.
Uhhh NCAA yards records for the 50/100 free?!
And 100 fly. He would break 50m free, 100m free, 100m fly, 100m IM
You don’t watch NCAA swimming do you?
I think the LC 50 fly record in the article is slightly out 🙂
