Last weekend at the Swedish Grand Prix 100 butterfly World Champion Sarah Sjoestroem put up the world’s top time of 57.41 taking over the position from Australian Madeline Groves,who had recorded a time of 57.42, today Sjoestroem improved on her time by almost a full second.
At the Gold Lanes Invitational in Amiens Sjoestroem took the women’s 100 butterfly in a time of 56.53, which ties the time she posted to win the World Championships in Barcelona this summer. For Sjoestroem the win in Barcelona was a long time coming, as she won the same event at the 2009 World Championships and had not made it back to the podium at a major championships since.
Her winning time of 56.06 in 2009, which is her lifetime best, was also a new world record, which was broken in London by Dana Vollmer who swam a 55.98 to win Olympic gold.
In Amiens Katinka Hosszu of Hungary finished second in a time of 59.50 followed closely by Camille Muffat of France who finished third posting a time of 59.53.
Sjostrom also took the women’s 50 freestyle in a time of 24.82, a season’s best tying her with Bronte Campbell of Australia for the fifth fastest time in the world.
Femke Heemskerk of the Netherlands finished second recording a time of 25.10 followed by Hosszu who finished third touching in a time of 25.65.
Sjostrom’s Swedish teammate Michelle Coleman took the women’s 200 backstroke in a time of 2:10.98 putting herself in the world’s top 10 with world’s ninth fastest time.
Hosszu finished second in a time of 2:12.12 followed by fellow Hungarian Evelyn Verraszto who finished third posting a time of 2:15.05.
Hosszu claimed gold in the women’s 800 freestyle, dominating the race by 37 seconds, winning in a time of 8:36.46.
Moniek Nijhuis of the Netherlands took the women’s 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:08.65 followed by Charlotte Bonnet of France who finished second in a time of 1:09.63.
In the men’s events Jeremy Stravius of France won both the 200 backstroke (2:00.53) and the 100 butterfly (53.90).
Jasper Van Mierlo of the Netherlands won the men’s 50 freestyle while Erik Persson of Sweden took the men’s 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:02.95.

Sjoestrom always make swimming fast look so easy, she is such a great natural talent.
This bodes well for her Euro, however, we must remember that Sjoestrom always swim very fast in season, as fast or even faster than the times she swim at a major.
Looks like Sjostrom’s time is coming 🙂
