SMU Mustangs Dominate Mid-Week Competition Against Incarnate Word

The SMU Mustangs opened 2016 with a win over incarnate word today  in San Antonio. The men took victories in 12 of the 13 events that were contested on the day. They  started the afternoon meet off with a win in the 200 medley relay. The team of Bartosz Krzyzaniak, Stefan Popov, Sam Straughan and Ziga Cerkovnik finished in 1:32.62. The team was about four seconds off their fastest time so far for the 2015-2016 season.

Holiday training seems to have had positive results for freshman Mustang   Lucas Schenke of Hamburg, Germany- who had individual wins in both the 1000 free (in a lifetime best of 9:32.69) and 500 free (4:37.95). Another double event winner in the freestyle discipline for the Mustangs was Austrian sophomore Christian Scherubl, who posted wins in the 100 (46.87) and 200 (1:40.40). To round out the Mustang domination of the free events, Cerkovnik took home first in the 50 (20.88) and the men took a win in the 400 free relay at the close of the meet. Cerkovnik also was able to take home first in the 100 breast (57.02).

So far this season, five Mustangs have put up NCAA qualifying times including Krzyaniak, Bryce Klein, Scherubl, Popov and Parker Meinecke.

No final score was available when this recap was posted.

A delegation from both  the SMU and Incarnate Word teams will be present at this weekend’s Texas edition of the Arena Pro Series. The Mustangs  will return to team competition in a dual meet against the Texas A&M Aggies on January 29th. Incarnate Word will not see competition again until the CCSA Conference Championships in Atlanta from February 17th-20th.
