SMU’s Cotton Fields Clocks New PB of 3:43.16 in the 400 IM on Friday of SMU Invite

The action kept rolling at the SMU Invite through Friday. The 2nd full day of the meet featured the 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, 200 medley relay, and 800 free relay.

Yale kicked off the finals session with a big win in the women’s 400 IM, seeing Caroline Riggs pop a 4:13.76. She won the race convincingly, getting out to a great start with a 58.80 on fly and 1:05.13 on back. She was equally excellent through the breaststroke, where she split 1:11.71, then she came home in 58.12.

Miami’s Savannah Barr then took control of the women’s 200 free, swimming a 1:46.62 for victory. She swam a very tightly split race, going out in 52.69 on the first 100 yards, then came home in 53.93.

Yale was then back in the driver’s seat, as Jessey Li clocked a 1:00.05 to earn the win in the women’s 100 breast.

Miami’s Emma Shuppert was on top in the women’s 100 back, clocking a 52.79. She was a touch faster in the morning, as she posted a 52.65 in prelims.

Miami also won the women’s 200 medley relay, where Shuppert led off in 24.50. Emma Sundstrand then popped a 27.76 breast split, followed by Giulia Carvalho with a 23.22 fly split. Talia Bates anchored the Hurricanes’ relay in a speedy 21.90, getting them into the finish in 1:37.38.

The Hurricanes actually swept the women’s relays on the night, taking the 800 free relay as well. Bates led that relay off in 1:45.90, setting a great tone. Adrianna Cera was 1:48.85 on the 2nd leg, Mary Smutny swam a 1:48.86 on the 3rd leg, and Barr anchored in 1:47.69. Their final time was 7:11.30.

Moving into the men’s events, SMU’s Cotton Fields had a great swim in the men’s 400 IM, winning the race in 3:43.16. He was out with some speed, going 50.57 on fly and 55.80 on back, which put him into the halfway point at 1:46.37. He followed it up with a 1:04.01 on breast and a 52.78 on free. The swim marks a new personal best for Fields in the event.

The Mustangs kept it rolling, seeing Christopher Mykkanen take the men’s 200 free in 1:34.12.

Drury then picked up a big win in the men’s 100 breast, where Davi Mourao swam a 52.69 to touch out SMU’s Lance Butler (52.77). Mourao was excellent on the back half of the race, coming home in 27.84.

Drury also won the 100 back, where Viktor Khnykin swam a 47.11.

SMU won the men’s 200 medley relay, seeing John Easton (22.16), Joe Rusnock (23.94), Russell Exum (20.30), and Lance Butler (18.99) combine for a 1:25.39.

Hawaii took the men’s 800 free relay in 6:29.08. Meacham Meacham led off in 1:37.17, Timothy Gallagher split 1:37.23 on the 2nd leg, Mario Surkovic clocked a 1:36.01 on the 3rd leg, and Milan Bukovics anchored in 1:38.67.
