Smutny Doubles Down on Final Night of Orlando Sectionals

2017 SOUTHERN ZONE SECTIONALS – ORLANDO

The 2017 Southern Zone Sectionals came to a conclusion tonight in Orlando, Florida. 16-year-old Mary Smutny put up a pair of highlight performances, winning back-to-back events during the final session. She first stepped up for the 200 fly, dominating the field with a 2:13.85. After a quick turnaround, she returned to the top of the podium in the 100 free. In that race, Smutny used her back half speed to pull ahead of Ryley Ober (57.31) and Grace Redding (57.38), winning the race in 57.18.

FGCU junior Vanessa Rivas completed her sweep of the Dominican Republic breaststroke records tonight, turning in a 2:41.86 to place 6th in tonight’s final.
