Daniel McArthur, a senior at Lakewood High in Southern California, has made a verbal commitment to the University of Utah. His older sister, Maryssa, is in her third year on the Utes’ women’s team.
“I’m incredibly excited to be a Ute. There are many reasons I decided on the U of U, but what it really came down to was the extreme enthusiasm I experienced from the coaching staff and the motivation I saw in the entire team to be the best.”
McArthur is primarily a back/IM specialist. Representing Lakewood High at the CIF-Southern Section Division II Championships last May, McArthur won the 200 IM and 100 back, setting the D2 record in the latter with 48.48.
McArthur swims for Coach Jon Moore at Lakewood Aquatics. Although he competed at Speedo Junior Nationals in 2013, McArthur’s end-of-season meet this past summer was the Western Zone Senior Championships in Clovis. There he achieved an Olympic Trials cut in the 100m back with 56.63; had he swum that at Juniors he would have been an A-finalist. As it turns out, McArthur’s was the 14th fastest 100m back of all boys 18-and-under in the U.S. last summer.
McArthur’s best times are:
50y back: 22.76 | 50m back: 27.30 |
100y back: 48.38 | 100m back: 56.63 |
200y back: 1:44.39 | 200m back: 2:05.24 |
200y IM: 1:47.86 | 200m IM: 2:07.55 |
400y IM: 3:55.55 | 400m IM: 4:34.06 |
100y free: 46.05 | 100m free: 52.84 |
200y free: 1:42.10 | 200m free: 1:56.09 |
In addition, he has split 20.9/45.2 freestyle on relays.
McArthur should add a boost to the Utes’ lineup as soon as he arrives in Salt Lake City. His 100 and 200 back times would have made “B” finals at 2014 Pac-12 conference championships, while his 200 and 400 IM times would have made “C” finals. McArthur should also be a great addition to the Utes’ relays.
This commit coming on the heals of defeating AZ men last weekend adds momentum to the constantly improving Ute men’s team. I have said this in the past and will say it again the Utes under Joe Dykstra’s guidance will be a team to reckon with in the not too distant future
