Sophomore Roderick Huang of MIT Wins Elite 90 Award for D3 Men’s Swimming and Diving

MIT sophomore Roderick Huang has won the NCAA’s Elite 90 Award for the Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship.

The Elite 90 Award is given every year to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average who competes at the respective NCAA Championships in the sport. Eligibility requires that athletes must have been a member of their team for at least two years and be an active participant at the championship competition.

Huang is the first member of the Engineers’ men’s swimming and diving team to win the prestigious award, and only the second MIT swimmer – after Margaret Guo ’16 – ever to have earned the honor. This is MIT’s 21st Elite 90 Award overall, which ranks the Engineers second all-time across all divisions behind only Stanford, who leads with 28.

Huang majors in mathematics and computer science, and currently has a 5.0 grade point average.

At the 2023 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships, Huang placed 19th in the 200 breast (2:01.79), 20th in the 400 (3:59.32), and 26th in the 200 IM (1:50.99). He won both the 200-breast and 400 IM at the NEWMAC Championships and finished second in the 200 IM

Huang is a CSCAA First Team Scholar All-American and was named to the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference team this season. He was a Verizon product development intern and took part in the MIT Deep Learning Research where he studied normalizing flow. He is also a member of the AI Club and the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament Club.

Last year, as a freshman, Huang was fifth in the A final of the 400 IM (3:55.00) and eighth in the 200 breast (1:58.40); he also placed 17th in the 200 IM (1:49.36).

MIT tied for fifth place in the men’s meet at the 2023 NCAA DIII Championships, scoring 214.5 points.

Indeed, but back in my days you did not see just one school getting all the top scores at the Putnam.
