South Africa Takes Home 78 Medals From Junior Africa C’ships

The 2019 CANA Junior Africa Swimming Championships in Tunis, Tunisia concluded on Saturday, September 14th, but not before the nation of South Africa collected a total of 78 medals. Taking away 46 gold, 22 silver, and 10 bronze, South Africa surpassed its previous haul of 57 medals at this same competition 4 years ago in Egypt.

Multiple Gold Medalists for South Africa:

Pieter Coetze wreaked havoc on the men’s 15-16 age group, reaping a total of 5 individual gold medals over the course of the meet. The teen nailed a winning effort of 23.81 in the 50m free and also clinched 50m back gold in a mark of 26.40.

The men’s 100m back also fell victim to the South African, with Coetze clinching the top prize in a result of 56.40. He completed the trifecta backstroke events with a time of 2:05.07 to also beat the 200m back field as well.

Coetze’s additional medal came in the form of his 50m fly victory, with the teen punching a time of 25.30 to hear his anthem play once again.

Luca Holtzhausen did additional damage for South Africa, collecting a quartet of individual gold medals for the nation. Holtzhausen hit the wall in a mark of 51.94 for 100m free gold, followed by a logging of 1:53.40 for the 200m free victory. He nailed a time of 2:09.63 to top the men’s 200m IM podium and also doubled up with a winning effort of 4:32.74 in the 400m IM.

Matthew Sates was another big-time medal catcher for South Africa, with the man knocking down golds left and right in the 15-16 age category. He tied Coetze for the top prize in the 50m free, also clocking 23.81 and hit an additional free podium with the top time of 3:59.15 in the 400m.

Sates doubled up on the 100m and 200m breast events, clocking times of 1:03.35 and 2:16.41, respectively, while he finished off the 200m IM field in a time of 2:06.01. He went on to stop the clock in 54.24 for the 100m fly win and 2:02.83 for the 200m fly win to capture an impressive 7 individual golds all together.

For the women, Lisa Klen brought home gold in the 100m breast for the 13-14-year-old category, hitting the wall in 1:15.18. She snagged another gold in the 200m distance of the same discipline, touching in 2:43.38. Klen closed out the competition with 2 additional wins, with a time of 1:05.80 in the 100m fly and 2:27.71 in the 200m IM.

Lisa Coetze produced a time of 2;09.06 in the 200m free and a time of 4:34.10 in the 400m free to reap golds across both events for the 13-14 category.

Lara van Niekerk also got her job done, taking the 50m breast in 32.10, the 100m breast in 1:00.07 and the 200m IM in 2:21.46.
