South Africa Tops Day 1 Medal Table At 2021 Swimming Championships

The 2021 CANA African Junior/Senior Swimming Championships kicked off yesterday in Accra, Ghana, with South Africa already surging to the top of the medal table.

As a reminder, this is typically a biannual meet; however, the 2020 edition was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. At the 2018 edition in Algiers, Algeria, it was Egypt who took the overall national medal table trophy, collecting a total of 48, including 28 gold. South Africa settled for runners-up.

Through day 1 this time around, South Africa has reaped 5 total medals, including 2 golds, while Egypt and Algeria each got on the board as well.

Topping the podium already was Egyptian swimmer Youssef Elkamash, with the 26-year-old grabbing gold in the men’s 100m breaststroke in a time of 1:02.05. That beat out the next best swimmer, that of Matthew Randle of South Africa by a second, while Algerian Jaouad Syoud rounded out the top 3 in 1:03.10.

Elkamash finished with the silver rin this event 3 years ago but was quicker in Algeria, posting a time there of 1:01.54.

For the women, South Africa’s Rebecca Meder got it done on two different occasions, reaping gold across the 100m free and 400m IM. In the former event, the 19-year-old from Cape Town touched in a time of 56.22 to just outperformed her teammate Inge Weidemann who wrangled up 2nd place in 56.31.

In the latter event, it was a 1-2 South African punch as well, with Meder scoring 4;55.36 while Christin Mundell produced a time of 5:10.80 for silver.
