SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – South Dakota men’s and women’s swimming and diving posted a combined 12-4 dual record during the two-day Coyote Extravaganza held at the Midco Aquatic Center on Friday and Saturday.

The Coyote women posted a 9-1 mark taking part in the six-team event as a 5-0 day one was followed by a 4-1 day two. The Coyote men, meanwhile, evened out at 3-3 after going 2-1 on Friday and 1-2 on Saturday.

Jacob WonJack Berdahl and Mairead Powers were each double individual winners for South Dakota during the meet. Cassie Ketterling and Emily Kahn also earned individual victories in a women’s meet that included Northern Iowa, South Dakota State, St. Cloud State, Sioux Falls and St. Thomas.

Won, a senior, won the 100 fly in 51.40 and took the 500 free in 4:48.69, narrowly edging out teammate Keegan Henning, who was second in 4:49.36.

Berdahl, a freshman, won the 100 breast in 57.48 and came back to claim the 200 breast in 2:10.26, nipping teammate Jake Leichner (2:10.72) at the wall.

Powers, a freshman, won the 400 IM in 4:36.69 and had a strong victory in the 500 free in 5:12.32.

Ketterling, a senior, swam to a win in the 100 IM in 1:00.33 while Kahn, a freshman, triumphed in the 100 free in 52.89.

The Coyote women won two of the four relays contested, taking the 200 free with the foursome of Christina SpomerSara MayerShannon Banark and Kahn. The quartet of Emma ClarkMeghan Atwell, Ketterling and Kahn claimed the 200 medley relay in 1:48.72.

South Dakota men, competing against South Dakota State, St. Cloud State and St. Thomas, posted a victory in the 400 medley relay behind the quartet of Adam Fisher, Berdahl, Aidan Gantenbein and Charlie Bean in 3:27.43.

Kahn had a pair of runner-up showings individually, clocking 24.14 and 24.63 on consecutive days in the 50 free. Ketterling was second in the 100 fly (58.20) while other runner-up performances came from Gantenbein in the 100 fly (51.58), Bean in the 100 free (47.25), Fisher in the 100 back (52.50), Davenport in the 100 breast (1:07.25), Mayer in the 200 free (1:56.98) and Won in the 200 fly (1:56.59).

The Coyote men posted three second-place finishes out of the four relays contested as Brady TorborgMack Sathre and Griffin Wolner joined Leichner on the 400 medley relay team. Bean, Sathre, Torborg and Kopp closed the meet with a narrow loss in the 400 free relay, while Torborg, Sathre, Kopp and Bean were second in the 200 medley relay.

South Dakota women had two runner-up finishes in the four contested relays as Lucie Anderson, Atwell, Ketterling and Mayer teamed for a second in the 400 medley relay. Kahn, Mayer, Atwell and Hannah Aitkin finished second in the 400 free relay.

Third-place individual efforts came from Hudson Wilkerson (1M Diving), Kayla Middaugh (3M Diving), Stella Fairbanks (1M Diving), Henning (1000 free), Stephen Johnson (200 free), Griffin Wolner (400 IM), Zachary Kopp (50 free), Clark (100 back), Gantenbein (100 free), Anderson (200 back), Won (200 free), Isabel Fairbanks (100 IM), Bean (50 free) and Leichner (100 IM).

South Dakota will close its first semester schedule in two weeks with the three-day Augustana Invitational, also at Midco Aquatic in Sioux Falls.

SIOUX FALLS — Zach Boyd swept the diving events to lead the South Dakota State men’s swimming and diving team on the opening day of the Coyote Extravaganza Friday night at the Midco Aquatic Center.

The reigning Summit League Diver of the Year, Boyd scored 260.65 points on the 1-meter board and tallied 306.30 points en route to winning the 3-meter competition and pacing a Jackrabbit sweep of the top three spots in the latter event. Erik Thompson finished second with 268.13 points and Spencer Fritze placed third out of 10 3-meter competitors with 263.78 points.

Fritze also placed second in 1-meter diving with 258.45 points, with Thompson taking fourth with 251.50 points.

In the swimming events, Eric Anderson was the lone Jackrabbit winner Friday in the four-team meet, racing to victory in the 100-yard freestyle in a season-best 46.46 seconds. The freshman from Fargo, North Dakota, led an SDSU contingent that claimed five of the top six spots in the event. Charles Sieglaff was third in 47.70 seconds, followed by Justin Wallar in 48.03 seconds and Rafael Negri fifth in 48.14 seconds. Sam Johnson placed sixth in 48.39 seconds.

Anderson also posted a runner-up finish in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.11 seconds, with Sieglaff (:21.89), Negri (:21.90) and Wallar (:21.91) taking the fourth through sixth spots, respectively.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Anderson, Negri, Sieglaff and Alex Kraft closed the Friday session with a runner-up time of 1 minute, 24.61 seconds.

Kraft added a runner-up individual finish in the 200 freestyle, clocking a time of 1:45.64, and placed third in the 500 freestyle in 4:56.07. Teammate Damon Venner took fourth in the 200 with a time of 1:47.08.

Also earning a runner-up placing Friday was freshman Austin Smith, who cut nearly two seconds off his previous season-best time in the 400 individual medley to finish in 4:17.21.

South Dakota State holds leads over two of its three opponents after the opening day of the meet, which also features South Dakota (121-103), St. Thomas (154-69) and St. Cloud State (111-113). The meet concludes Saturday, with action beginning at 10:15 a.m.

SIOUX FALLS – South Dakota State closed the two-day Coyote Extravaganza swimming and diving competition at Midco Aquatic Center by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay in both the men’s and women’s divisions Saturday afternoon.

The Jackrabbit quartet of Elisabeth TimmerEmma WalzEmma Bachelder and Kelsey Kocon claimed the event in 3 minutes, 32.77 seconds. The relay event capped a successful weekend for Timmer, who went 4-for-4 in individual races, including capturing both the 100 freestyle (52.06 seconds) and 200 freestyle (1:55.57) on Saturday.

Walz added a runner-up finish in the 200 backstroke, 2:05.70, while Kocon placed sixth in 2:10.04. Bachelder finished fourth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.54 seconds.

As a team, SDSU went 2-3 in the six-team event. The Jackrabbit women claimed duals over St. Thomas (120-102) and Sioux Falls (129-80), while falling to host South Dakota (102-121), Northern Iowa (77-146) and St. Cloud State (110-112).

On the men’s side, the South Dakota State foursome of Rafael NegriAlex KraftSam Johnson and Eric Anderson won the 400 freestyle relay finale in a time of 3:06.36. Earlier in the day, Anderson swam to victory in the individual 100 freestyle with a time of 46.95 seconds and was runner-up in the 50 freestyle, 21.07 seconds.

Kraft turned in a pair of runner-up finishes in the freestyle events, placing second in both the 200 (1:44.93) and the 100 (:46.95) as he was part of a pack of Jackrabbits who claimed five of the top seven spots in the latter event. Rafael Negri was fourth in the 100, 48.41 seconds, with Charles Sieglaff sixth in 48.70 seconds and Justin Wallar seventh in 48.85 seconds.

Other second-place efforts were turned in by Marcus Benson in the 200 backstroke, 1:58.01, and Austin Smith in the 100 individual medley, 53.62 seconds.

SDSU’s other individual title on the day came in 3-meter diving as Spencer Fritze led a Jackrabbit sweep of the top three spots with a winning score of 265.05 points. Zach Boyd took second with 249.40 points and Erik Thompson was third with 212.70 points.

The Jackrabbit men ended the meet with a 2-1 record in the dual format. SDSU downed Summit League foes St. Thomas (160-63) and SouthDakota (121-99), while dropping a narrow decision to St. Cloud State (111-113).

Both SDSU squads return to action Nov. 13 with a dual meet at Summit League opponent Omaha. Start time is set for 2 p.m.

CEDAR FALLS, IA – The University of Northern Iowa Swim and Dive team made their mark on the Coyote Extravaganza, finishing the weekend with nine dual meet victories. Despite falling short to South Dakota on Friday, the Panthers rebounded to defeat the Coyotes to sweep Saturday. 

DAY 1
Despite only one overall victory on the first night of competition, the Panthers picked up 33 wins within the dual meet structure en route to four team wins. 

Freshman Hallory Domnick was the only overall victory, claiming the top spot in the 1000 Freestyle with a 10:50.18. Junior Sarah Walpole took second in the overall standings with a 10:55.53. Domnick also grabbed a third place finish in the 500 Freestyle with a 5:19.32. 

Amber Finke finished among the top-three overall in both the 200 Freestyle with third place in 1:57.17 and the 100 Backstroke for second place with a time of 57.96. Not far behind Finke finished Payton Hall in fourth place (59.63) and Helena Heuberger in fifth (59.64). 

Freshman Hannah Taylor recorded a season best as the highest Panther finisher on 3-meter, scoring 213.55 points and claiming seventh place overall. Her score recorded a victory against South Dakota State. 

Faith Larsen stayed within the top five ranks all night. She placed third in the 50 freestyle (24.55) and fourth in the 100 freestyle (54.24). Larsen joined Clare ChristensenTaylor Short, and Liz Purtle in the 200 Freestyle Relay which secured the third place finish in 1:38.13. 

Lily Ernst placed third (4:43.13) and Olivia Chambers placed fifth (4:45.57) in the 400 Individual Medley.

DAY 2 
The second day of competition produced 46 dual-meet wins, including five overall wins. The Panthers finished all five dual meets with wins. 

To open the day, freshman Olivia Chambers dominated the 1650 Freestyle, winning with a 18:28.14. Not long after, junior Taylor Hogan secured the top spot on 1-meter with a final score of 250.15. Against South Dakota State, freshman Abby Hutchins and Hannah Taylor joined for a one-two-three finish.

Freshman Faith Larsen and sophomore Amber Finke both captured victories in Sioux Falls. Larsen won the 50 Freestyle with a 24.53 and Finke took the 200 Backstroke in a 2:05.29. Sophomore Lily Ernst won the 200 Butterfly in a 2:08.66, followed in third by fellow sophomore Scout Bergwall and Domnick in fourth. 

Freshman Meghan Pallet and junior Mia Sevicivec raced to finish second and third place in the 200 Breaststroke. Pallet took second in 2:27.21 and Savicevic took third in 2:27.45. Also big points for the Panthers included Payton Hall who finished fourth in the 100 Individual Medley and swam a new career-best 1:01.35. 

Staying in the top three, Larsen finished in second place in the 100 Freestyle in 54.34. Abbie Bangs recorded her first top three finish of the Coyote Extravaganza, taking second place in the 500 Freestyle (5:18.58) with Sarah Walpole following in fourth place (5:21.46). The Panthers 200 Medley Relay team finished in second place with Finke, freshman Ema Lavigne, Bergwall, and Larsen in 1:47.89.

Prelims begin at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. at the Capitol Federal Natatorium.
