South Dakota State Picks Up Commitment from MN State Finalist Matt Sorenson

Matt Sorenson of Mission Viejo, CA has announced his decision to swim at South Dakota State University beginning in the 2020-2021 season. He swims year-round for Saddleback El Toro Swim Team and he graduated from Mission Viejo High School in 2019. He will be a second-generation DI swimmer, as his mother T Sorenson swam at Iowa State University.

Sorenson shared the news by stating, “I chose South Dakota State University because it is a place where I can excel in both my academic and athletic career, and  I am so excited to be apart of such an amazing program! Go Jacks!

In May of 2019, Sorenson competed at the CIF Southern Section Division I Championships. He qualified to swim the 100 breast and the 200 free, and he swam on 2 relays for Mission Viejo High School. He placed 31st in the 200 free and 25th in the 100 breast. He led off the team’s 200 free relay that placed 23rd, with a time of 22.29. Similarly, he led off the 400 free relay, going a 48.82. A month earlier, Sorenson eared a personal best time in his 100 breast (58.53) at the Sea View League Championships.

At the club level, Sorenson swim for Saddleback El Toro, where he and his mother are both assistant coaches. In February, he qualified to swim at the Speedo Sectionals in Carlsbad. He swam the 50, 100, and 200 free, the 100 and 200 breast, and the 200 IM. Sorenson swam in two finals races, earning a second-swim after strong performances in his 1o0 free and 200 breast. His 100 free prelims time of 47.33 placed him 37th, while his finals time of 48.15 finished 30th. He was seeded 19th after the prelims heats of the 200 breast (2:07.12) and ultimately placed 20th. Both his 100 free and 200 breast prelims swims earned personal best times.

When he joins South Dakota State University in the fall of 2020, Sorenson will be one of the team’s top breaststrokers. He will train alongside Q Steffen and Gavin Wheeler, as they train for the 100 and 200 breast. Sorenson will be the team’s 5th fastest 200 freestyler, giving him a close chance to earn a spot on the team’s 800 free relay. Sorenson will be a member of South Dakota State’s class of 2024.
