South Dakota State Women, South Dakota Men Lead Augustana Invite

SIOUX FALLS – Three more records were broken Friday as South Dakota State men’s and women’s swimming and diving finished day two of the Augustana Invitational.

Through two days, the women continue to lead the eight-team field with a point total of 844.5. The men are currently second of four teams with a point total of 979, sitting only behind South Dakota with 1,228.5 points.

“The wave of success and momentum keeps going through our team,” said head coach Doug Humphrey. “Every event was great with a lot of personal bests and more school records falling. Tomorrow our challenge will be to finish with the same intensity we have seen so far.”

The women’s 200 free relay ‘A’ team (Elisabeth TimmerKatie DrezenGrace WitherspoonAshley Theobald) broke the school record in the event with a time of 1:34.15.

Timmer reset the 50 free school record with a time of 23.13 in the opening leg of the 200 free relay after previously breaking it Thursday (23.28).

Freshman Alyssa Eckstein also broke a school record, swimming a 4:27.03 in the 400 IM to pass the previous mark of 4:27.18 set by Andee Budahl in 2014.

Women
Eckstein earned gold in the 400 IM with her record-breaking time for the Jacks while Kristen Davis placed sixth in a season-best 4:36.77.

Timmer placed third in the 200 free with a season-best swim of 1:52.12. Emily Pincus finished with a 1:53.43 mark, coming in sixth.

In the 100 Breast, Eckstein placed second in a season-best 1:03.44 and Sam Frigard finished fifth (1:04.77).

Tiffany Nguyen led the team in the 100 back with a fifth-place finish in 57.96.

Men
Quenton Steffen swam a 4:08.12 in the 400 IM to place third. Austin Pham (4:08.36) finished in fourth and Damon Venner (4:09.88) finished sixth, each season-bests.

Reece Stikeleather earned silver in the 200 free, swimming a career-best 1:41.50. Cody Watkins followed in fourth with a 1:41.97 mark.

Steffen led the way for the Jacks in the 100 breast, placing sixth with a time of 57.89.

In the 100 back, Henry Skinner (50.89) finished third, Josh Wuflestad (50.97) fourth and Jared Miller (51.16) fifth.

Relays
In the 200 free relay, the women placed second with their record-breaking time of 1:34.15. The women also finished second in the 400 medley relay with the ‘A’ team (Nguyen, Eckstein, Davis Timmer) swimming a 3:47.27.

The men’s ‘A’ team (Skinner, Mac JohnsonWill Bierschbach, Watkins) placed third in the 200 free relay in a season-best time of 1:22.97. The 400 medley relay ‘A’ team (Wuflestad, Steffen, Watkins, Skinner) swam a 3:26.85 to finish fourth.
