South Dakota Sweeps St. Thomas As Women’s Team Wins 100th Dual Under Coach Jason Mahowald

ST. PAUL, Minnesota – South Dakota senior Stella Fairbanks hit an NCAA Zone Qualifying Mark on the one-meter diving board during Saturday’s Summit League swimming and diving dual with St. Thomas inside Anderson Pool.

The Coyotes won 23 of the 26 events as the men’s team posted a 143-98 win and the women’s team earned a 189-53 triumph. The victory was the 100th dual win for the women’s team under head coach Jason Mahowald.

Fairbanks swept both diving events, hitting the NCAA Zone Qualifying Mark on the one-meter board with a score of 268.10. She also claimed the three-meter competition with a score of 260.10.

South Dakota women won all 13 events contested in its dual, including seeing eight different ladies account for the nine individual swimming event victories.

Emily Kahn led the charge with wins in the 50 free (24.06) and the 100 free (53.19) while the junior swam the led-off leg on a winning 200 free relay, joining Gabbie AhrendtChristina Spomer and Skyler Leverenz in clocking 1:37.43.

Ahrendt touched the wall first in the 100 fly (57.83), one of two freshmen to earn individual victories, as Taylor Horan opened the individual portion of the meet with a win in the 1650 free in 18:19.25.

Sophomores Camilla Brogger-AndersenTatum O’SheaTaylor Buhr and Grace Schultz also claimed individual wins as did junior Mairead Powers.

Brogger-Andersen won the 500 free (5:18.38), O’Shea the 200 free (1:54.34), Buhr the 100 breast (1:05.60), Schultz he 100 back (58.23) and Powers the 400 IM (4:45.73).

The Coyote women opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay clocking 1:47.40 for the quartet of Anna BalfanzPhoebe PaarlbergBri Ruark and Christina Spomer, three freshmen and a junior.

The men’s team won eight of the 11 individua events as Matthew Sorbe won two and six others – Mack SathreJack BerdahlAdam FisherZachary KoppKeegan Henning and Charlie Matthews – claimed a win apiece.

Sorbe, a sophomore, won the 1650 free (16:37.17) and the 400 IM (4:18.57), the first and last individual events of the meet.

Sathre won the 200 free (1:45.22), Berdahl the 100 breast (56.60), Fisher the 50 free (21.56), Kopp the 100 free (46.48), Henning the 500 free (4:46.23) and Matthews the one-meter diving event with a score of 261.70.

The foursome of Fisher, Berdahl, Jacob Carlson and Kopp won the 200 medley relay in 1:31.90 and the quartet of Carlson, Aidan GantenbeinDean Wall and Kopp claimed the 200 free relay in 1:24.53.

The Coyote men and women head to Lawrence, Kansas, next week for the Kansas Tri-Duals on Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday (11 a.m.). Summit League foe Lindenwood is the other team competing in the meet.

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of St. Thomas swim and dive season is off and running for 2023-24. This past weekend, the Tommies got their first taste of Summit League competition, as they hosted the University of South Dakota in a dual Saturday morning. While neither team came away with a victory, St. Thomas did experience plenty of highs in its home pool in the second weekend of competition.

MEN’S RESULTS: St. Thomas (98) vs. South Dakota (143)
A trio of familiar names found themselves atop the leader board in the Tommies 143-98 loss to the Coyotes on Saturday. Sophomore Ben Linde (Andover, Minn. / Andover) opened the day with a huge victory for St. Thomas, claiming the top spot in the 3-meter diving competition. The sophomore won the event with a six-dive score of 223.05, earning nine quick points towards St. Thomas’ overall team score. He finished second in the 1-meter competition behind a six dive and season best score of 253.50.

Alex Foti (Waukesha, Wis. / West) and Philip Jensen (Hastings, Minn. / Hastings) also impressed in the poll for the Tommies. Though he didn’t win the event, Foti’s swim in the 1650 freestyle was impressive, as he finished second with a time of 16:39.49. Foti would also go on to finish second in the 500 freestyle behind a time of 4:46.73.

Jensen won two individual events in the pool for St. Thomas, claiming the top spot in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. The sophomore earned first place in the 100 backstroke, his first individual race of the day, behind a time of 50.29 before winning the 100 fly with an eerily similar time. Jensen clocked the fasted time in the even by nearly two full seconds, winning the 100 fly with a time of 50.53.

WOMEN’S RESULTS: St. Thomas (53) vs. South Dakota (189)
Like the men, the Tommie women found success in the distance races on Saturday, as Elizabeth Bonneville (Lakeville, Minn. / South) continued her impressive start to 2023-24. The junior finished second in the 1650 free, closing with a time of 18:41.16 in her season debut in the race. Teammates Madeline Elseth (Grand Forks, N.D. / Central) and Grace Shroer (Gold River, Calif. / Casa Roble) finished third and fourth in the marathon race with times of 19:49.04 and 19:57.05 respectively.

Grace Urkiel (Rosemount, Minn. / Rosemount) just missed out on her seventh individual win of the 2023-24 season. In the 100 breaststroke, the senior was out touched at the wall by South Dakota’s Taylor Buhr, finishing second by .01 of a second. Urkiel’s time of 1:05.61 helped her finish second in her loan individual race of the day.

Grace Forsberg (Rice Lake, Wis. / Rice Lake) and Libby Fischer (Eagan, Minn. / Visitation) finished second and third in the 50 freestyle, clocking times of 24.87 and 25.16 respectively. Hanna Ryan (Blaine, Minn. / Blaine) and Caroline Peterson (Northfield, Minn. / Northfield) earned top-3 finishes in the 400 IM with times of 4:48.47 and 4:50.88.

UP NEXT

St. Thomas will head to the University of Minnesota of its first multi-team competition of the 2023-24 season. The Tommies will take on both the Gophers and South Dakota State in a triangular set to take place on Friday, October 27. The meet is set to begin at 5:00 p.m. CT in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
