Spain Announces Provisional Rosters for World Jrs, Euro Jrs, Euro U23 Championships

The Royal Spanish Swimming Federation (RFEN) has announced provisional rosters for three age-protected events for 2023:

These rosters come after the season’s first qualifying opportunity, the Spanish Spring Open Championships, two weeks ago. Another qualifying opportunity comes in May at the Mare Nostrum stop in Barcelona.

2023 European U23 Championships

A provisional roster for the first edition of the European open-ish U23 Championships has been released with 2 women and 4 men.

The meet will be held from August 11-13 in Dublin, Ireland.

2023 World Junior Championships

Spain, meanwhile, will send 10 women and 2 men to the World Junior Championships, similar to the fairly-dramatic gender imbalance that they have lined up for the World Championships.

Events have not been assigned to this roster yet.

The meet will be held from September 4-9 in Netanya, Israel.

Spain won 6 medals at the last edition in 2022: 3 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze. That ranked them 6th by the traditional gold-silver-b bronze medal table sort (though Italy had 20 medals and only 2 golds).

Spain ranks 8th all-time on the World Juniors medals table with 12 gold, 7 silver, and 11 bronze among 30 total medals.

World Aquatics expanded its age definitions for junior meets this year, allowing women born in 2005 and men born in 2009 to participate in the meet – allowing Carrasco Cadens and Carron Muina to participate.

2023 European Junior Championships

The biggest roster announced so far for this summer’s global championships, Spain will send 19 women, 13 men, and all 8 of the relays to the European Junior Championships.

This roster includes their entire World Junior Championships roster, who will use it as a tune-up about two months out.

The 2023 European Junior Championships will be held from July 4-9, 2023 in Belgrade, Serbia.

Spain won 1 gold and 1 bronze medal at last year’s European Junior Championships, which ranked them 15th in the medals table. They have 1 gold medal at each of the last few European Junior Championships.
