Spain to Send 14 Athletes to Kazan

Spain will be sending 14 athletes, seven male and seven female, to compete at the World Championships in Kazan this summer. This year’s team will be slightly smaller than the one that the nation sent to the competition in 2013.

In Barcelona the Spaniards collected four medals in total, three silver and one bronze. The two swimmers who won those medals will once again be representing Spain.

In Barcelona Mireia Belmonte won silver in the 200 butterfly and the 400 IM while taking a bronze in the 200 IM. Belmonte currently ranks second in the world in the 200 butterfly, fourth in the 400 freestyle and fifth in the 400 IM. Although she did have success last summer winning two gold, two silver and a bronze at the European Championships she has not posted times better than her 2013 performances in the events in which she medaled.

Melanie Costa took the silver in the 400 freestyle in 2013 finishing behind Katie Ledecky. Costa took the silver in Barcelona recording a time of 4:02.47, which was a best time by close to two seconds. Since that race the fastest she has swum is a 4:07.24 at last year’s Spanish Championships.

The team also includes:

Female

Duane da Rocha, Marina García, Beatriz Gómez, Judith Ignacio and Jessica Vall

Male

Miguel Durán, Víctor Martín, Rafael Muñoz, Juan Miguel Rando, Miguel Ortiz-Cañavate, Albert Puig and Marc Sánchez
