Spanish Open Day 4: Hugo Gonzalez Breaks Own Men’s 200 Back Championship Record

Through the 4th day of the Spanish Open, C.N. Sabadell has remained in the lead in the men’s standings, however, C.D. Gredos San Diego is closing fast, and sits just 1 point behind Sabadell. In the women’s standings, C.N. Sant Andreu has opened a big lead, entering day 5 56 points ahead of C.N. Sabadell.

On day 4, Real Canoe N.C.’s Hugo Gonzalez, fresh off his return from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, won the men’s 200 backstroke, breaking the Championship Record. Gonzalez swam a 1:58.14, winning the race handily over France’s Antoine Harlem (1:59.07). With the swim, Gonzalez broke his own Spanish Championship Record, which stood at 1:59.15 from July of 2018. Gonzalez is also the Spanish National Record-holder in the event, with his personal best of 1:56.69. He swam that time to win Gold at the 2017 World Junior Championships.

17-year-old C.N. Arteixo swimmer Paula Otero Fernandez won the women’s 800 free in 8:35.48, breaking the Junior Championship Record. Fernandez shattered the previous Jr Championship Record, which was an 8:39.99 from Beatriz Cons, set in July 2016. In today’s race, Fernandez got her hand on the wall first by 2.52 seconds She also established a new personal best with the swim, chipping 0.37 seconds off her previous best of 8:35.85, which was swum on July 7th of this year, at the European Junior Championship.

There was another record broken during day 4 finals. Laura Rodriguez Sanchez (C.N. Mijas) finished 2nd in the women’s 200 breast. Olympian Jessica Vall (C.N. Santa Andreu) won the event in 2:26.49, with Rodriguez touching behind in 2:27.54. Rodriguez’s time marks a personal best by 2.20 seconds. Her previous best of 2:29.74 was set in February of this year. The swim by Rodriguez also shattered the Junior Championship Record of 2:29.30, which was held by Alba Vazquez from July of 2018. Notably, C.E. Inef de Lieda’s Emma Carrasco Cadens (16) finished 3rd in 2:27.54. The swim not only marked a massive lifetime best for Carrasco, it also put her well under the previous Junior Championship Record. Alba Vazquez, the previous Jr Championship Record-holder, finished 4th in the event in 2:29.10.
