British Swimming’s ‘Splash Awards’ Cancelled

Karen Pickering a four time British Olympian and World Championships medalist posted on her Twitter feed yesterday that Great Britain will be cancelling this year’s Speedo Splash Awards due to the country’s poor showing at the London Olympics.

Pickering created the event in 2004 to honour the achievements and raise the profile of British Swimming.

In her own words Pickering describes the purpose of the event and her feelings about it:

“As a former long standing member of the Great Britain team, I really wanted to do something to celebrate aquatic achievements and founding The Speedo Splash Awards is one of my proudest accomplishments outside of competition. I hope, with my support, The Speedo Splash Awards provides a platform for recognising aquatic sporting success for years to come.”

Pickering also tweeted that “I disagreed, I felt we had lots to celebrate but couldn’t change their minds.”

Great Britain went into the 2012 Olympics with the goal of five to seven medals and fell well short of that winning three medals which is only half the medal count they had in 2008.

Plus she was gracious .
