For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Southern Illinois University has received a verbal commitment from JK Mullen High School’s Will Chavez beginning in the fall of 2020. Chavez made the announcement by saying, “I’m excited to announce my verbal commitment to further my academic and athletic career at Southern Illinois University! GO DAWGS!

Chavez, a senior at JK Mullen High School, earned 4 medals during his junior season at the 2019 CHSAA 4A Boys State Championship in Thronton, Colorado. In his first event of the meet, Chavez placed 3rd in the 50 free, improving his prelims time of 21.42 by 0.07 seconds. After a brief break, he went on to earn another bronze medal in the 100 free (46.40). He dropped 1.3 seconds from prelims and climbed up from fifth place. He earned two more chances at the sprint events, leading off his team’s 200 and 400 free relays. JK Mullen’s relay team consisting of Noah Maestas, Cameron Smoke, and Ben Freeman was narrowly out-touched by Broomfield, nevertheless earning the boys a silver medal. Chavez, Smoke, and Freeman were joined by Charlie Baker for the 400 free relay at the end of the meet. They charged to the wall 2 seconds behind Discovery Canyon High School to earn their second silver medal.

At the club level, Chavez trains and competes with the University of Denver Hilltoppers. Chavez most recently raced at the Speedo West Winter Junior Championships, qualifying for the 50, 100, and 200 freestyle. Chavez recorded personal best times in all three of his races, dropping 3 seconds from his previous 200 free time of 1:42.79 that he had achieved only a week earlier.

Top SCY Times:

  • 100 free – 45.99
  • 50 free – 20.96
  • 200 free – 1:39.53
  • 100 back – 53.77

In the fall, John will be the team’s second fastest 50 and 100 freestyler behind Robert Chelberg, and the fastest in the 200 free, making him a potential candidate for the men’s team’s relays. His 50 and 100 free times wouold have placed him in the B-final at the 2019 Mid-American Championships, while his 200 free time would have landed him in the A-final.
