Sprint news 12/5/12: Turks, Canadians Break National Records; Matheus and Altimar Show Down in Brazil

…In the past two weeks, three Canadian National Records have been struck down: one a senior, two age groups, and all three short course meters relays. On November 23rd at the Canada Cup, a relay of Lauren LavignaMartha McCabeNoemie Thomas, and Heather MacLean broke the National 200 short course meters medley relay record with a 1:51.54. They represent the UBC Dolphins A few days later, in the same pool but in a time trial, a 13-14 group from Etobicoke broke the 800 free relay record. Olivia AndersonLaura JohnstonStephanie MacDonald, and Melanya Zaraska swam an 8:22.32. That included a 2:04 anchor for Zaraska. Then, once again in the Etobicoke pool at the 2012 Youth Cup on Sunday, ESwim took down their second record in a week. This time it was the boys, who swam an 8:04.65 to clear the other 13-14 800 free relay record. Abdullah AhmadJacob LeeDumitru Lunga, and Rodrigo Villalobos were the victors this time…

…Brazil has completed all of their club national championships for the year, but the national school championships still went on last week for 15-17 year olds in long course. The meet turned into a great battle between 16-year olds Matheus Santana and Luiz Altamir, both of who are National Age Group Record holders. Altimar got his biggest win in the 200 free with a 1:51.03; that knocked two-tenths off of the old national age record. In the 50, Santana won in a new Meet Record of 23.21, with Altamir second in 23.75. The tie-breaker came in the 100 free, where in a small upset, Altamir won 51.47 (MR) to 52.00. For Brazil to have two 16 year’ olds swimming 51’s in their 100 frees is impressive, and to see them match up like this head-to-head can only be a huge positive for the sport in that country…

…The Turks are just a week away from the kickoff of the 2012 World Short Course Championships, and they warmed up the pool well at last week’s Turkish Nationals and Selection Trials. The meet was without the best-known Turkish swimmer (Ediz Yildiremer, who is currently swimming for the University of Georgia in the US), but the Turkish juniors were on-fire. Most notable among them was Beste Samanci, a 12-year old breaststroker. In a 25-meter course, she swam 1:09.62 and 2:31.09. That not only broke the National 13 & under record, or the National 14 & under record; but it broke the 15-16 National Record in both events. Her 32.69 in the 50 only broke the 13 and 14-year old records. A full list of records broken can be seen in this PDF, with full meet results here. The official test meet in the World Championships pool is this Friday…

Is the Brazilian swims done in SCM or LCM?
Because a Norwegian 15 year old swimmer has done 22.88 in the 50 free and 50.62 in the 100 freestyle.
In SCM

LCM.

But Matheus is already 23.01 and 50.25 on LCM.. he is probably the fastest 16 year old freestyler..

on SCM his best time of 49.6 was already beaten by another 16 with 49 low..

8:04 isnt all that fast for a 13-14 guys record especially compared to the girls. Don’t get me wrong… the time is good. But for a national record?

Its amazing how Brazil 1996-1998 generation is improving. At least four guys(Luiz Altamir,Matheus Santana,André Augusto dos Anjos and Felipe Ribeiro) if americans, will be top10 all time in their categories in LCM.Santana, already 23.01 and 50.25(50 and 100 free LCM) will be going to do a training camp with Popov´s coach next year.
I still remember 2003 when Cesar Cielo(sixteen years-old at that time) broke 52seconds barrier in 100 free and shocked the field. This year, besides Santana and Altamir there is another four guys under 52 seconds.I dont know how good they will be in 2016, but everything is showing they will be really good around 2020 games.
