Sprint News 7/16/12: NC State Opens at USC; Mass. HS Adds Swimming

…North Carolina State has released their 2012-2013 swimming schedule, and the men will open up their dual-meet schedule with a good one: they will head to SoCal to show down with the USC men in a two-day meet. The Wolfpack probably don’t have enough depth to contend for the meet win (if it’s swum under normal circumstances), but for a team that had a breakout season last year, it will be a good reminder of where this program is trying to get to. The women’s first dual meet will be in Baton Rouge against LSU – that should be an outstanding matchup. They will also race at Winter Nationals this year in early December, before heading on to the ACC Championships in Greensboro. The full schedule can be seen here

…As college swimming programs continue to be cut, high school swimming programs continue to be added around the country. The latest is Old Rochester High School in Massachusetts, located on Cape Cod about midway between Boston and New Bedford. The decision was made by the school board last month after parents requested the move to satisfy the increase in participation in high school swimming, as well as existing local interest in summer teams. The program will be self-funded for its first two seasons, after which time the costs will be gradually shifted to the district…

…Australia’s 2012 Olympic Team, an overall roster of 410 athletes, is its smallest since 1992. It still dwarfs any other country in the world in terms of firepower per capita, though. Meanwhile, the U.S. Olympic Team, on the 40th anniversary of the Title IX gender equity bill, for the first time will have more female Olynpians than male Olympians: 269 women and 261 men. That holds true on the swim team as well, with 25 women and 24 men…

…Iceland is holding their pre-Olympic training camp in Canet, France at that country’s most popular training camp location. There, they will prepare in the outdoor 50 meter pool that hosts the annual stop on the Mare Nostrum tour, usually with great success…
