Sprinter Addie Laurencelle Drops Cal; Recommits to UVA for Fall 2020

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Charleston, South Carolina’s Addie Laurencelle has announced his verbal commitment to the University of Virginia for the fall of 2020.

“I’m happy to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of VIRGINIA in the class of 2024. I want to thank my family, friends, and coaches for helping me get to this point. I cannot wait to be a Cavalier! WAHOOWA✌🏻🔶⚔️🔷#gohoos”

Laurencelle graduated from Bishop England High School in May. Last October, at the start of his senior year, he had announced his intention to swim for Cal in the class of 2023. In the interim, he decided to do a postgrad year at Deerfield Academy and to join Brian Brennan, Jack Moore, Matt Brownstead, Noah Nichols, Tanner Hering, and Will Cole in the class of 2024 in Charlottesville next fall.

Laurencelle was a multi-sport (basketball, baseball, lacrosse, hockey and track & field) athlete until his sophomore year of high school when he decided to focus on swimming. The 6’6” sprinter told SwimSwam at the time, “I’ve only been swimming year round for 2 whole years. This past long course season was my first and I qualified for summer Jrs in the 50 free and winter jrs in the 100 free.”

Laurencelle hasn’t competed since Greensboro Sectionals in the spring of 2019, at which time he earned PBs in the 50/100/200 free and 100 fly. He’s been on an impressive trajectory over the last two years but is still out of scoring range for ACCs. It took 20.01/43.76/1:36.62 to score in the 50/100/200 free at 2019 conference championships.

  2017 2018 2019
SCY 50 free 21.19 20.72 20.57
SCY 100 free 46.77 45.77 45.18

This seems like a really smart decision. Extra year away from home to get a chance to adjust to living at a school, chance to improve his times before starting college, recommit to a school closer to home? He sounds like a kid that has everything thought out and is on a successful path. Wish more kids would look into the PG option especially if they’re latecomers to swimming or started dropping time later in high school.

I would be very interested to learn more about this option. How to navigate, etc. Please do you have any links, info to share?

I’d start by looking into schools that have a PG option and swim program that have recently sent kids D1 like Exeter, Hotchkiss and Deerfield. Maybe contact their admissions offices and check out their websites.
