Berkley Smith of Middleton, Wisconsin, has verbally committed to DII Wingate University, in North Carolina. She will join the Bulldogs’ class of 2024.
Smith announced in late October,
“I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to Wingate University, in North Carolina. Thankful for all the amazing people that have helped me [along] the way. Go Bulldogs!! #wuswim”
Smith didn’t focus on swimming competitively until she reached high school, where she quickly fell into a leadership position as Middleton High School’s captain starting her junior year. She also led her team in the water: over the past three years, she competed on the Cardinals’ Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Division I State Championship team. Smith and her teammates won first place overall in 2017 and 2018. At this year’s WIAA D1 state meet, Smith split :27.31 in her 50 back on the 200 medley relay and :23.53 in her 50 free on the 200 free relay. Individually, she swam the 50 free (finals) in :24.28 and placed tenth; in her 100 free (finals), she swam a :53:04 and again placed tenth. If Smith had been on the Bulldogs’ 2018-2019 squad, she would have been the team’s fifth-fastest 50 freestyler. As for the 100 freestyle, she would have been the 9th-best on the team. At the 2019 Bluegrass Mountain / Carolinas Conference Championships, Smith would have B-finaled in both the 50 and 100 individually.
