Allegheny North Swim Club sprint freestyler Katie Wright has given her verbal commitment to the Ohio State Buckeyes for next fall.
“Although the campus is amazing and the swimming facility is second-to-none, it was the team, coaches, and everything that Ohio State has to offer that made me want to be a Buckeye. I chose Ohio State because it was a great fit academically, and the swim program is incredible.”
Wright anchored North Allegheny High School’s medley and 200 free relays at last year’s PIAA ‘AAA’ State Meet. The medley won a state title, while the 200 free relay placed 4th overall. Wright also qualified and swam at the meet in the 50 and 100 freestyle races.
Wright’s Progression in the Sprint Free Events
2013 | 2014 | 2015 | |
50 free | 26.34 | 24.84 | 23.73 |
100 free | 58.25 | 55.03 | 52.44 |
Wright has put major dents in her lifetime bests from season to season, and she’s developing into a very strong sprinter as she continues through her senior year at North Allegheny.
This season, OSU will be led by sophomores Macie McNichols and Zhesi Li along with seniors Rachel Dzierzak and Annie Jongekrijg in the sprints. With Dzierzak and Jongekrijg graduating soon, Wright will come in and bulk up the sprint group at OSU to help patch up the holes left behind.
“I loved the girls from the team that I met on my Official Visit and I’m excited to spend my next four years as a Buckeye!”
Wright, along with versatile distance weapon Molly Kowal, will join the Buckeyes’ arsenal next fall.
