St. Bonaventure Swim and Dive tops Colgate in Home Opener

MEN

The St. Bonaventure Men’s Swimming and Diving teams opened the 2014-15 home schedule with a dominating 230-61 win over the Colgate Raiders.

The Bonnies did not lose a single event Saturday afternoon sweeping the 16 race meet. The Bonnies also had 6 swimmers record multiple wins on the day

The Double winners for the Bonnies were Greg Byrne, Michael Pilyugin, Matthew Schutt, Viacheslav Shchukin and Matt Rochna. Byrne won the 1000 freestyle (10:02.37) and the 200 Backstroke (1:59.51). Pilyugin took home titles in the 200 Freestyle (1:45.40) and the 100 Backstroke (52.79). Schutt touched the wall first in the 100 and 200 Breastroke events in 58.70 and 2:14.19, respectively. Shchukin was the champion in the 50 Freestyle and the 100 freestyle in times of 21.08 and 45.70. Rochna captured the 200 and 100 Butterfly events in winning times of 1:54.50 and 50.62.

Other event winners for St. Bonaventure were frshman Michael White in the 500 Freestyle (4:51.75), Preston schilling in the 200 I.M. (2:01.51) and finally Alex Marra in the 3M Diving (282.0)

Next Up: The Bonnies will travel to the University of Pittsburgh to battle the Panthers next Saturday afternoon on Oct. 25th.

WOMEN

Sophomore Tanja Kirmse won all three of her individual events Saturday afternoon as the Bonnies opened their 2014-15 home schedule with a 165-122 loss to Colgate University.

St. Bonaventure recorded five first place finishes on the day. Kirmse led the way by capturing the 200 Freestyle (1:55.06), 200 Butterfly (2:07.49), and the 500 Freestyle (5:06.09). The fourth St. Bonaventure win came courtesy of junior Elizabeth Malone, who outtouched Maggie Carney of Colgate to win the 100 Butterfly with a time of 59.22. The last Bonnies Victory was in the 3 Meter diving event where freshman Kessler Thompson took home the title with a 6 dive total of 198.22.

The Bonnies also had three swimmers record second place finishes as well as two relay teams. Meaghan McCann, Maria Rocchi, Elizabeth Malone and Rachel Bull took second place in the 200 Medley Relay (1:51.12). In the 400 freestyle Relay, Kirmse, McCann, Taylor Anderson and Bull finished second touching the wall at (2:40.60). In the 1000 Freestyle, freshman Michaela Ryan took second place with a final time of (10:56.37). Malone continued her strong day finishing second in the 200 Butterfly (2:09.63). The last runner up finish the Women’s team recrded was in the 200 Breaststroke when freshman Maria Rocchi touched the wall in a time of 2:30.12.

Next Up: The Bonnies will return to action next saturday Oct. 25th when they travel to the University of Pittsburgh to battle the Panthers.
