Stanford Men Sweep Sun Devils

The Stanford men topped off their weekend in Arizona with a 134-96 win over the Arizona State Sun Devils, winning nine of 13 events and maintaining a 5-0 record.

The Cardinals started off the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 Medley Relay, with the Stanford B team touching in 3:18.66 ahead of ASU’s A team (3:19.91). Stanford’s C team was just behind for third in 3:20.01.

Stanford freshman Liam Egan took the 1000 Free (9:16.42), touching over 8 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Sun Devil Jan Kutnik claimed second in 9:24.80 ahead of Cardinal Danny Thomson (9:29.72).

The Cardinal took a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 Free, with the charge led by junior Tom Kremer (1:38.37). His teammates Sam Perry (1:39.05) and Thomas Stephens (1:39.16) finished nearly one tenth of a second apart for second and third ahead of ASU’s Barkley Perry (1:39.44).

Sean Duggan was a double event winner of the meet for the Cardinal, taking his first win in the 50 Free in 20.72, just seven one-hundredths of a second ahead of his freshman teammate Patrick Conaton (20.79). Touching third was Sun Devil Tadas Duskinas in 20.86.

Stanford completed another 1-2-3 sweep, this time in the 200 IM. Cardinal junior Gray Umbach (1:48.59) touched just ahead of teammate Max Williamson (1:48.82) for the win, with both gentlemen swimming an NCAA B cut. Stanford freshman Curtis Ogren followed up for third in 1:51.34.

The Cardinal swept the diving events, with teammates Kristian Ipsen (398.18) and Bradley Christensen (342.00) taking first and second in the 1-meter. Both divers would go on to take first and second in the 3-meter, but exhibition their scores. ASU’s David Hoffer officially took first with 353.18 points.

In the 200 Fly, Stanford freshman Andrew Liang took the top spot in 1:49.19 ahead of Sun Devil senior Zac Dalby (1:49.63). Dalby‘s teammate Pat Park touched third in 1:51.33 ahead of Stanford’s Ryan Arata (1:52.68).

Cardinal Sean Duggan claimed his second event victory of the meet and a sweep of the sprint freestyle events with a win in the 100 Free (45.15). He touched just one tenth of a second ahead of Stanford teammate Thomas Stephens (45.24). ASU’s Richard Bohus followed up for third in 46.06.

Stanford senior David Nolan touched first in the 200 Back with an NCAA B worthy time of 1:45.38. Sun Devil sophomore Barkley Perry finished second in 1:47.77 ahead of Stanford’s Gray Umbach (1:48.97).

Sun Devil Jan Kutnik claimed a win for the Sun Devils in the 500 Free (4:33.50), finishing ahead of a 2-3-4 Cardinal charge. Kutnik was just six one-hundredths of a second ahead of Stanford’s Drew Cosgarea (4:33.56). Cosgarea‘s freshman teammate Patrick Conaton took third in 4:36.77.

The Sun Devils swept the 200 Breast, with ASU junior Thibaut Capitaine taking the top spot in 2:01.74, just ahead of teammate Christian Lorenz (2:01.90).

Arizona State went on to sweep the 200 Free Relay to close out the meet, with the A team finishing in 1:21.74. ASU’s B team touched second in 1:27.30.
