Stanford Secures Verbal Commitment from Double-Legacy Luke Maurer (#19 in 2020)

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Luke Maurer, whose mother and father both swam at Stanford, has verbally committed to the Cardinal for 2020-21. Maurer is the #19 recruit in our class of 2020.

“I am honored and excited to announce my verbal commitment to study and swim at Stanford University. I’d like to thank all my family, friends, and coaches that helped me get to this point. I am excited to join a great group next year! #GoCardinal”

A rising senior at Loyola Academy in Wilmette, Illinois, Maurer is following in his father’s footsteps. Erik Maurer was also a star at Loyola thirty years ago when he won three titles at the Illinois High School State Championships. He then went on to swim at Stanford where he met Luke’s mother, Lea Loveless Maurer, who became a two-time Olympic gold medalist and American record-holder in the 100m backstroke. She was also head coach of the Stanford women’s swimming and diving team from 2005 to 2012.

The 6’7” Maurer specializes in the 100/200 free, both of which he won at 2019 IHSA Boys Swimming & Diving Championships last February. He went 1:37.33 to win the 200 free with an 8/10 margin and 44.33 to win the 100 free by 4/10. He also led off the 12th-place 200 free relay (20.79) and anchored the 12th-place 400 free relay (44.38).

Maurer swims year-round for Nasa Wildcat Aquatics. He was runner-up in the 100 free (49.90) and took fifth in the 50 free (23.27), seventh in the 200 free (1:52.66) and seventh in the 400 free (3:59.22) at 2019 Speedo Junior Nationals. In short-course season he won the 500 free (4:21.05), was runner-up in the 100 free (44.00), and was third in the 200 free (1:36.33) at the 2019 NCSA Spring Championship.

Maurer would have been a C-finalist in the 100/200/500 free at 2019 Pac-12 Championships. He will join Ethan Hu, Preston Forst and Rick Mihm in the class of 2024.

Top SCY times:

  • 200 free – 1:36.33
  • 500 free – 4:21.05

Congrats to Luke Maurer. Best wishes for some fast swimming!

Additional info: His dad, Erik, was an NCAA champion in the 50 free in the early 90s. His mom, Lea, swam the backstroke leg on the Olympic gold-medal winning, world-record-setting 4×100 medley relay at Barcelona (along with Anita Nall, Chrissy Ahmann-Leighton, and Jenny Thompson); and, was bronze medalist in the 100 back at the same Olympics. She also was World champion in the 200 back in 1998. Important tidbit: Lea claims to have “never, ever pulled on the lane line doing backstroke in practice.”

You won’t find a more down to earth – salt of the earth human than Luke’s mom, Lea. Humble background, she keeps her head down in victory and up in defeat. Best of luck, Luke and every blessing !
