Stanford’s DeVine Swims to #2 All-Time with 3:35.2 400 IM

2018 MEN’S NCAA SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

3 of the 10 fastest performers history swam in tonight’s NCAA 400 IM final as Georgia’s Gunnar Bentz, Stanford’s Abrahm DeVine, and Cal’s Andrew Seliskar entered the water. Tonight, it was DeVine on top as he became the 2nd fastest 400 IMer in history. His 3:35.29 was his best time by 2 and a half seconds. It was a close race with Seliskar until the freestyle leg, where DeVine took off to win it by 3 seconds.

Splits:

  • 100 Fly Split- 49.27
  • 100 Back Split- 54.11
  • 100 Breast Split- 1:01.78
  • 100 Free Split- 50.13
  • Final Time- 3:35.29

Notably, the 2nd and 3rd fastest times of the night actually both came from the B final. In the championship heat, Arizona’s Nick Thorne ran down Seliskar for 2nd, 3:38.56 to 3:38.74. Florida’s Mark Szaranek, the 8th fastest performer ever, swam a 3:37.64 to win the B heat, just out-touching Cal’s Mike Thomas (3:37.75). Thomas made a huge drop, taking nearly 3 and a half seconds off his time tonight to just miss the top 10 all-time performers list. DeVine’s time tonight was a 2 and a half second drop.
