Star Swimming’s Sydney Thomas Commits to Eastern Michigan

The Eastern Michigan University Eagles have received a verbal commitment from Sydney Thomas of Jamestown, NY. Thomas will join former Star Swimming teammate Rebecca Winnert for the 2016-2017 season under the guidance of head coach Peter Linn. The 6’2” Southwestern Central High School senior is a member of USA Swimming’s Scholastic All-America team and she’ll be the first one in her family to compete at the NCAA DI level.

The EMU Eagles have just come off a great season as the women’s 2nd place finish at the 2015 Mid-American Conference was their strongest showing since 2007. Thomas’s most significant additions to this squad are her backstroke and developing butterfly events. Her 100 back (57.51) and 200 back (2:04.23) swims were just shy of a top 16 finish at the 2015 Mid-American Conference, however, these times were swam in Thomas’s sophomore and junior years. The three-time NCSA Junior National qualifier has the opportunity to better her times this season in preparation for her entrance to collegiate swimming.

“I chose EMU because I felt right at home from the moment I walked onto campus. The team and coaches couldn’t have been more welcoming towards me. I am so thrilled to be a part of Eastern Michigan Swimming next year. I can’t wait to be an Eagle!”

Thomas is no stranger to winning as she is the back-to-back 100 back champion at the NYSPHSAA Section IV Championships. She also recently picked up a pair of 1st place finishes in the 200 free (1:57.07) and the 500 free (5:14.86) on October 28th at the CCAA Division I Championships in Olean, NY. If she can continue this trend then Eastern Michigan has made a smart investment for the future.
