Claire Jackson, the Utah 5A state champion in the 500 free, has verbally committed to the University of Utah for the 2016-2017 season.
Jackson, who swims for Hunter High School and the West Valley Aquatic Seawolves, won the 500 freestyle at last season’s Utah 5A State Championships in a landslide 5:11.18, eight seconds ahead of the nearest competitor. She also took second in the 200 freestyle in 1:54.81. Back in 2014, she won the state championship in the 100 free in 53.55 and took third in the 50 free in 24.60. Here are her fastest times:
- 50 FR: 24.36
- 100 FR: 52.47
- 200 FR: 1:53.73
- 500 FR: 5:10.90
- 1650 FR: 18:02.40
Last year’s Utah team, led by coach Joe Dykstra, finished sixth at PAC 12 Championships. Jackson isn’t quite fast enough to make the Ute ‘A’ relays, but many college freshman see huge improvements in their first year of swimming due to increased training intensity.
“I chose Utah because I loved the team, coaches, and facilities,” Jackson said. “And I’m really lucky to have such a great school so close to home!”
