Alabama sophomore Charlie Hawke had a statement swim on Thursday morning at the Art Adamson Invitational, registering the top time in the country in the men’s 200 freestyle.

Hawke, an Australian native, clocked in with a time of 1:32.24, overtaking Texas’ Luke Hobson (1:32.74) for the fastest time in the NCAA this season while also downing his own personal best of 1:33.09 set at February’s Bulldog Invitational.

Hawke’s Splits

  • 21.97
  • 45.53 (23.56)
  • 1:08.80 (23.27)
  • 1:32.24 (23.44)

Hawke advanced into the final more than two seconds clear of the next-fastest swimmer, Air Force senior Wen Zhang (1:34.55), while last night’s 50 free winner and 200 free NCAA ‘A’ finalist last year Brooks Curry sits fourth in 1:34.84. Pro swimmer Brett Pinfold was third-fastest overall in 1:34.71.

Also posting the fastest time in the nation was Texas A&M junior Chloe Stepanek, who logged a time of 1:44.41 in the women’s 200 free to overtake Texas’ Kelly Pash (1:44.78).

Stepanek, who had previously been 1:47.65 this season, set a personal best of 1:42.40 at the 2022 SECs, but this swim essentially matches her fastest-ever at this point in the season. In 2020, she was 1:44.40 at the Art Adamson Invite, and last season she went 1:45.02.

Canadian pro Sydney Pickrem, who trains at Texas A&M, swam a lifetime best of 1:45.56 to finish second in the heats.

Another highlight from the session came in the women’s 100 breast, as reigning national champion Kaitlyn Dobler posted a quick time of 58.54, with Alabama’s Avery Wiseman a close second in 59.07. Dobler, a junior at USC, is the only swimmer who has been under 58 seconds so far this season, going 57.83 at the USC Invitational.

Coming off a string of sensational performances in last night’s finals session, LSU’s Maggie MacNeil cruised through the heats this morning, qualifying into the final of the women’s 100 fly tied for second (52.49) and moving through fifth in the 100 back (52.97).

Texas A&M junior Olivia Theall neared her best time to lead the 100 fly (52.45), while Alabama’s Morgan Scott was 52.49 to tie with MacNeil. Scott also ranked second in the 100 back (52.40), trailing Alabama senior Rhyan White (52.32).
